nd staff offices. Students are not billed for their printing, although we'r=
e considering setting an artificial quota on student printing, that when ex=
ceeded will require the student to seek permission from a faculty member to=
raise their quota, with an explanation as to why they're doing so much pri=
nting (and hopefully a lesson on being more mindful of wasteful printing). =
Wow, that was a long sentence.
As others have noted, PaperCut also has the ability to delete duplicate pri=
nt jobs submitted within x minutes of each other, do pop-ups to the user te=
lling them how much they've printed (and how much if costs if you can quant=
ify that), and other nice printer control features. It also has a WebPrint =
feature, whereby someone can upload a document to a website and have it spi=
t out of a printer. We're beginning to role this out to our Guest VLAN for =
student and faculty owned laptops.
We do have networkable copiers that can do scanning and printing, and we us=
e many of them for printing, although certainly not exclusively. Most of o=
ur actual PC-to-paper actions happen on traditional printers.

Subject: Printer software
Please forgive the cross posting. =20

My IT person is suggesting that we look into software that would help
control the amount of unnecessary printing. I'm guessing this works by
one person controlling which jobs would go through to the printer,
thereby letting us delete the 2nd, 3rd , 4th and so on copies that
sometimes come through the printers and then are left.=20
=20
Do you any of you have this kind of software? How does it work, are you
happy with it, can you recommend what you use now?
=20
Also - do you charge for printing? Currently, we do not charge for
printing, but do charge (via copy card) for photocopies.
=20
And one more query - do any of you have a set up where the print jobs go
directly to the photocopy machine, thereby not even having printers.
=20
I appreciate any information you can send my way! =20
=20
Thanks for your time,
Barbara
