Re: Good K-8 websites for kids

Hi David -

Here are a couple of ideas for your project. Feel free to use or file away!

I highly recommend using social bookmarking
tools<http://www.commoncraft.com/bookmarking-plain-english>when
looking for good online resources. I find great stuff in the bookmarks
of my network in Delicious <http://delicious.com/> (
http://delicious.com/network/elemenous), for example. Even doing a search in
Delicious might narrow your search a bit to sites that have already been
vetted by people.

I also use another social bookmarking tool called
Diigo<http://www.diigo.com/>because it allows me to make lists of
bookmarks. So, I have a lists for
math <http://www.diigo.com/list/elemenous/mathematics> and
science<http://www.diigo.com/list/elemenous/science-and-science-education>sites
for example. I also recommend Diigo because it allows people to
bookmark to groups. For instance, I recently started a group just for the
best of the best<http://groups.diigo.com/groups/coolest-web-sites-ever-for-teachers-and-students>in
terms of web sites for teacher and kids: . There is also a group
in Diigo for independent school
educators<http://groups.diigo.com/groups/independent-school-collaboration.>.
These groups might be worth searching.

At my previous school, I set up links in Pageflakes, and set each computer's
home page to this so that kids could easily navigate to preselected sites. I
haven't updated this in a quite awhile, but you're welcome to take a look:

Finally, here are a few personal favorites:

Anything from Eduweb http://www.eduweb.com/
The National Archives Digital Vault <http://www.digitalvaults.org/>
myLOC.gov (Make sure you check out their online exhibits that use
Silverlight)
Panwapa <http://www.panwapa.com/>
The Whale Hunt <http://thewhalehunt.org/> (not sure I would use with kids,
but it's an amazing site; found it while browsing Webby Awards sites)
Wild Earth TV <http://www.wildearth.tv/home>
Learning Reviews.com <http://learningreviews.com/jreviews/>

Hope this helps, and I'd love to see your list when you're done!
