I agree that all of our students could benefit from listening to the
President's speech. Yes, even privileged children in independent
schools who have "internalized" the message of responsibility and
hard work could be challenged to think about the reasons the
President chose to make the speech. The speech and the controversy
around it are a marvelous opportunity to explore how differing
viewpoints and passions are portrayed in the media and how the local
community responds.
Nothing in my career has saddened me more than the many educators who
are failing to embrace this opportunity to practice the principles
we teach. If we can't stand up for freedom of speech and model
respectful listening to those with whom we differ we should get out
of the business of guiding our youth.
