Re: ISED- Microsoft vs VM Ware for virtual servers

FWIW, we're currently running three ESX servers based on our recently
upgraded license from Enterprise to Enterprise Plus. The academic
pricing for VMware is very attractive. We upgraded since VMware
currently has a special that'll allow you 50 View 4.5 seats per
Enterprise Plus upgrade. If you're considering VDI (virtual desktop
initiative), you can utilize the overall vSphere environment for both
servers and desktops. We're running the overall enviro on two NetApp
FAS2020 filers via iSCSI (utilizing NFS) and an older Dell PowerVault
MD3000i (using VMFS) for our SAN storage for 30 servers and, currently,
30 VDI VMs.

We chose VMware over Hyper-V for the high availability and distributed
resource capabilities with minimal, manual intervention as well as it
being a more mature and stable platform, IMHO. The scripting and
management tools are fantastic as well as the overall developer/user
communities.

Happy to discuss our enviro in detail as well.

One is proposing to use our Microsoft Blanket License to save us money on server software the other company wants to use VMware claiming it is more stable than the Microsoft equivalent. This will be more expensive for us so is there a real advantage to going with VMware over Microsoft?
