Re: Query - 9th Grade Research Expectations

As a university librarian, I would like to comment on this question.
These grades as well as grades eleven and twelve are important years to
teach students how to use tools that are available to them to find
information on topics, and then produce a paper that uses and assimilates
the content they have read. Many if not most students come to college
with limited or nonexistent skills in doing research and in particular
lack skills in finding information. Students are in large numbers of the
belief that Google web search is the only source for finding information
on specific topics.

Many state governments have programs like Access Pa in my state that
provides access to bibliographic databases 24/7 via cooperating public
libraries and K-12 schools. These databases can be accessed from any
computer with a login that includes the users library account number and
perhaps a PIN. These databases usually include a substantial amount of
full text content so that students can see some of the needed articles on
their home computers day or night. Teaching skills in EBSCO and soon
ProQuest databases that involve conducting multistep searches that can be
combined into a much more precise search result than found in search
engine searching will both make their research more efficient and
productive. If students can learn geometry, chemistry, calculus, and
physics, they can also learn some rudimentary boolean algebra and learn
about narrowing searches to title and subject heading and combining search
steps. In so doing they will also be learning how to break their topic
into its component parts, discover synonyms for each aspect of their
complex topic and put these parts sequentially into the database.

Failure to prepare students to do research and know database searching
skills will make their college work very much harder and frustrating.

Also very important is that students learn to do more sophisticated
searching in Google and that these skills be applied to Google research
tools such as Google Scholar, Google Books, Google News Archive and Google
Government.

The more students are taught about research in K-12, the better they will
be able to find the information they need as students and employees after
high school is over.
