We also use the first initial, last name system. If my classes do any
exchanges with schools that require sharing email addresses, I create
separate accounts they use just for those exchanges that include their
first names only. However, sites such as pbworks.com may be safely
used without using any email addresses at all.
I think Steve Bergen at The Children's Storefront uses a system of
initials followed by year of graduation, which is another good
solution to my mind.
