Re: [Wizards-L] Wikis for Accreditation Self-Study

I'm a couple days late to the party, but we have been wrestling with the =
same question for a while. We were trying to push our accreditation body=
into updating their instrument to be a little more modern, but that seem=
s to have stalled. We will definitely use Google Docs for our process in=
ternally, but we may still give AIMS either a binder or a CD with PDFs.

The ability to share folders in Google Docs is great. Create a folder fo=
r the K-4 folks, and a folder for the 9-12 folks, and let them organize t=
hemselves within that group. When they're finished, you already have all=
the documents organized into groups, or by subject matter (since a docum=
ent can belong to several different folders, you can have one document in=
"English" and also in "9th grade").

One note with regards to "storage" for the long term. Google Docs stores=
documents as HTML. That's what you're editing. They used to even have =
an "Edit HTML" link in the menu, but I think it's been removed. Just exp=
ort the document (or documents) as HTML and set up a webpage either on yo=
ur school's website or internally on an intranet. Then the document live=
s and breathes. A novice web designer could apply a hundred lines of CSS=
styling to make it look pretty, and you're done. Total time investment =
is a couple of person-hours.

I cannot stress enough the importance of developing a **style guide** for=
use with large collaborative editing projects. Define when you will use=
a "Header 1" style, and when a "Header 2." When is prose expected, and =
when are bulleted lists OK? This will cut down on the editing you'll nee=
d on the backend, and it will make your eventual HTML look better as well=
.

Just my $0.02. Good luck! We're right behind you on that accreditation =
trail...
