fall on the love or hate side of google, and I am very much on the love
side. They have helped me in school, work, and life in general, and I've
never given them a dime. Frankly, I'm glad they tailor ads to me - if they
didn't, you would get ads with nothing but the same stuff you get in your
spam all the time. I do not need to know about cialis but if you want to
show me that amazon has a sale, well, thank you.
I just tried to forward one of our teachers email from yahoo to our google
apps email and found that yahoo charges $20/year for that functionality.
That may have been normal years ago, but today I am shocked. Google give
that away for free. In fact, you can sign up for gmail and never see an ad
since they allow you to download your mail to outlook/etc. for free as
well. In my eyes, this is not evil.
Sorry to rant about google, but I just don't get all "haters". They have
over 40 products to use at your will for free. By hating google you will do
nothing but leave yourself on the outside of a monumental shift in web
technology. I guarantee an exchange server is 10x more costly and more
likely to be "hacked" than just using google.
Google started as a project at Stanford, so they give back to the education
community by giving away their premier edition for free to anyone in
education. The only real difference is you get 7gb of email space per user
rather than 25gb.
If you do decide to go with google, just ask and I can provide you with the
resources I found to be incredibly helpful and I'll let you know some of the
setbacks and solutions we had.
I'll leave you with this link - if they can trust google apps, so can you:

Good Luck!
