Re: Ebooks

Our teachers use VitalBooks (http://www.vitalsource.com/) which comes
pre-loaded on our IBM laptops. The licensing comes with the lease of the
machine. The software also allows note-taking and highlighting.

Kitchen POS (Point of Sale) Systems with fingertip readers?

We are very small and independent school with a la carte kitchen menu. I'm
searching for a POS system that works with fingertip scanners. I would also
like parents to see itemized list of items purchased for each meal. POS
should be relatively easy for the kitchen staff to use. SIF agent is a plus.
Any suggestions? What do you use?

Does anyone have any recommendations on other auction software packages?
What are some benefits/drawbacks that you experience with your program?

Re: Anyone using Student Response systems in the Classroom

Sandy:

We have huge success using Promethean's Activote system (part of their
Activclassroom and embedded in their IWB Activboard and software
Activprimary/Activstudio). The Activotes allow a teacher to either
pre-plan questions or do them on the fly. I find them invaluable to do
a check in the middle of a lesson to see if the class has understood the
topic being covered.

Building on the success and functionality of the Activotes, the next
iteration is the Activexpression. Activexpression is a multi-funtion
vote system, allowing multiple choice, short answers, symbols, etc.
Both the Activotes and Activexpression can be seen here:

http://www.prometheanworld.com/us/server/show/nav.4240

The great thing about Promethean is that they are an IWB company that
only focuses on education. All of their products, including the
software, voting system, boards, etc., are designed solely for
education! Both the IWB and voting systems have made a huge difference
in our classrooms K thru 12!

If you would like more information, don't hesitate to contact me directly!

Re: TV in a new school building

Josh,

We put in a TV Studio as part of our construction/renovation which
opened in 2001. We also put in a media distribution system which this
connects through. CATV cabling was installed to every room so right now
we broadcast through that. Every teacher station has a TV tuner so we
can show any of the media through the computer and classroom projector.
You can however, also hook up a TV right to the TV drop. We also have a
broadcast cart which we can take to any TV drop in the building, plug in
and broadcast from that room. So we have two internal channels - one for
the TV Studio and one for the broadcast cart. It's not digital, but I am
now looking at what it would take to upgrade it, how that would impact
our network, etc.=20

As for a TV Studio, I would HIGHLY recommend it! The kids run a Morning
Show each day with the Daily Bulletin, announcements, sports segments,
etc. Since the TV studio is also a production studio, we run all sorts
of classes and special projects there. Right now, they are having
auditions for "BLS Idol" which are run in the TV studio. They edit and
broadcast the finalists for everyone to vote on. They create
"commercials" for different clubs to be run during the Morning Show. The
most popular was "The Carnation Tales", a five day "soap opera"
commercial to support the Valentines' Day flower sales. They created the
school profile/welcome video for the opening reception of our 10-year
accreditation visit. It was great -- they started with a "live"
broadcast and then went into the video. During "author" days in one
class, the kids dress up as their favorite author and give a
presentation. Now they do that in the TV studio and it's all recorded.
We have two broadcasters each day of the week and also have guest
broadcasters, especially new faculty and staff so the kids get to know
them. Then we have a technical team all organized by the student
producer.

This is just such a great opportunity for students. We've had students
get scholarshiops because of their experience in the studio and kids
going to college now to study this. C-Span was here last week with their
Campaign2008 bus and as part of the visit trained our kids in their
production studio. Our students have now formed their own club/company
"Wolfpack Productions". They broadcast all events from the auditorium,
the Alumni Association hires them to do all their events at school, they
negotiated an "exclusive contract" with the Head Master for all
broadcast rights at school (this was as much self preservation because
other groups were messing up their equipment and setups). They broadcast
the big pep rallies on the day before Thanksgiving from the big gym.
There is just so much the kids can do. They edit and post videos on the
web from all the events they cover.

Honestly, I just get out of the way and let them go. We've had one or
two issues with "appropriateness" and live comments, but they were
quickly resolved and the kids know they need to be professional. It's a
fabulous resource and I'm a big fan. You do want to get a company with
experience to spec out what is needed and put together the proper
equipment, cameras, lights and so on. You need a control room, too. We
renovated an old storage space when we created it. We also added a
teleprompter system a couple of years in and that's great. I'd really
recommend having that. AND get the wall painted chromacolor blue or
green!

Re: TV in a new school building

Joshua,

We have recently updated our broadcast room and added a network
component that allows us to save the programs as well as stream the
video to our catv equipment. We have also upgraded the catv plant
allowing us to remote broadcast from any room that has a catv
connection.

If you would like to come by and look at the setup send me an email

People Counters, anyone?

Hello,

=20

I'm looking into "People Counters" (sounds like something you would have
found at Disneyland in 1966, doesn't it?) to track traffic, as we don't
use a gate counter that sometimes comes with a security system. =20

=20

Does anyone have any experience with 'gateless' people counters? I'm
looking particularly at something from SenSource (sensourceinc.com) but
would like to have information on actual use in a working setting from
someone in the field, as it were. =20

=20

Let me know, and thanks!

Auction Software

We currently use AuctionStar to run our annual school auction. The
program works well in some areas, but it also has some major drawbacks.
Does anyone have any recommendations on other auction software packages?
What are some benefits/drawbacks that you experience with your program?

Hi Shabbi,
Thanks for your messages about tablets and ebooks. I just added a new
wiki page that includes the names and ISBN numbers of a few full-text
digital versions of texts we use here at BGA, and info I learned from a
previous search. We are pursuing this for all or our upper school text
books. I would appreciate others adding to this list of text books.
http://schoolcomputing.wikia.com/wiki/Electronic_Books_and_Texts In case
that URL gets broken, here is a shorter one: http://tinyurl.com/yst4uh I
do hope others will add info or email a response to this query. I'd
appreciate hearing what you find.
Thanks!

Is anyone using ebooks? We are exploring their use. Does anyone have any
guidance on publishers and licensing with using these on student owned
tablets?

Re: Key cards in dorms (UNCLASSIFIED)

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED=20
Caveats: NONE

I inherited a prox-card system at Lowell and I loved everything about it
except the software to administer the cards. The software we used was
Access Gold (AG) and I would not recommend it. What ever software you
select I would recommend that it:

--Can be administered by multiple people. Preferably a web based client
where you can grant access as needed with authentication based on AD or
other login credentials. AG could only be administered directly from
the server. You can use VNC and other tools to mitigate this but it
should be built in to the software.
--Allow for easy/fast search and retrieval of any given card's past
access or cards used at a given door/access point. Ever months worth of
data added 5-10 minutes to searching the records and the reports were
difficult to read unless you really understood the system.
--Allows you to group access points. Example: If you have 4 doors that
provide access to the dorm, you should be able to group them all into a
single group called "Main Entry". And grant access to that. AG made
you define user groups and they add devices individually. This meant it
took a lot more time to build out the user groups (especially in a
building with 21 external doors).

Most systems allow for this functionality but as I looked for
replacements (2 years ago), I was surprised how many lacked one of the
above. We also looked at swipe cards to extend the system to other
buildings, but despite the lower initial cost, the general consensus
among vendors was to stick with the prox system since the ware-and-tear
(read: repair frequency) was significantly lower on prox systems since
they required no physical contact.

Also, in our environment people generally preferred prox on key fobs
instead of the cards. They were a bit more expensive, but they tended
to be far more durable and did not get lost as frequently.

Anyone out there happy with a keycard entry system in their dorms?=20
Looking for a card swipe or proximity key card entry system, similar to
what's used in hotels. Success stories or systems to stay away from are
appreciated.
