Re: One True Media

I second the Voice Thread recommendation. We recently used it for
global collaboration in three different grade levels - and three
different continents. You can see what we did with it using these

Although they state there is school pricing, we've done everything with
just one login at each school.

One True Media

Hi all - We are looking for a program/online service similar to Photostory that allows students to work collaboratively. We had a few students who used One True Media on a recent project and loved the collaborative feature. However, OTM charges per
download and they don't seem to have any school pricing. Anything similar that is either free or offers a school subscription?

Re: printers v. copiers

We moved our student printing from LaserJet printers to Canon MFP(s)
last year. As you stated below there are many variables to consider
that can be school specific.

Last year our students were able to print to 60 printers across the
campus including 1 dedicated student copier. This year we reduced the
number of printers to 5 MFP(s) and added color scanning services.

The cost of student printing in the past was about $24000 when including
toner, maintenance, printer rotation, routing software and the single
copier lease. The cost of the 5 MFP(s) with toner/maintenance and lease
will be about $19000. Although we have seen a slight savings I find the
true benefit in increased uptime, outsourced maintenance and a fixed
replacement schedule. We have also seen a reduction in printing and the
elimination of misprints to the wrong printer.

The numbers above do not include faculty/staff copiers/printers or color
MFP(s) and large format printers in our labs.=20

Hi - One of our librarians asked a question about the economics of using
a printer vs. a copier. Thinking about it a bit, it seems to me there
are a few variables at work for most schools. Is the printer an ink-jet
or laser printer? How does the fact that most of our copiers are b/w
and most of our printers color capable affect the equation? And for a
question like this, I would define the word "economics" broadly enough
to include environmental repercussions. A fairly open-ended inquiry, but
I'm wondering if anyone has pertinent information. Thanks.

I know! I have seen the same thing in the research and the only way I can =

Sister Elizabeth,

I can't argue with your own numbers and experience, but they are inconsiste=

industry standards at the time indicated that large copiers produce B&W =

Re: printers v. copiers

Alex,

Thanks for sharing your analysis...

I've been looking at the ColorQube with its solid ink technology as well...
We have a number of Phaser 8560's in our environment and have been, for the
most part, very satisfied with their performance. However, we discovered
that laminating outputs from the solid ink devices does not quite work.
That's the main drawback for our teachers. I'm highly considering the
BizHubs...

Re: printers v. copiers

We have been examining our printing/copying performance all year. We began =
with a physical inventory of all printers and copiers, taking a look at pur=
chase prices, lease contracts, and ink costs. We then installed the free ve=
rsion of PaperCut Print Logger (www.papercut.com), and have been running th=
at for almost 15 months now. For our networked printers, we have data that =
can be used to determine cost per printed page, which devices receive the m=
ost usage, and which users are the most prolific printers. We also recently=
hooked up our copiers that are capable to the network to turn them into pr=
inters. Looking at the costs, our copiers print at significantly reduced pr=
ices compared to any of our printers. Yes the MFP devices cost much more, b=
ut the duty cycle on pages is much higher, and maintenance ends up being ch=
eaper over the life of the printer. Our biggest problem has turned out to b=
e color printers that do not print a lot of color, but end up printing high=
volumes. A page with a few lines of color ends up costing us a lot in term=
s of ink costs, which drives printing costs very high. We are looking into =
the Xerox solid ink line which allows for three price points on printing, B=
&W, low color, and high color. Depending on your actual devices, your analy=
sis may be different, but I would encourage you to do the actual analysis. =
When I showed the data to my advisory committee, many of the objections to =
removing printers and changing our printing patterns went away.

Re: printers v. copiers

I've done the arithmetic here. We have a big copier, color and black and =
white, a few medium size color laser printers and many black and white =
laser and color ink jets.

The copier is the most expensive. It is under a lease contract that is =
set up so that we only pay extra if we go over the contracted number of =
copies. It is still the most expensive way to reproduce things. From =
there it goes down just like you would expect, color ink jet, color laser =
and black and white laser.

Faculty Emeritus Programs

Hi there!

I am curious to hear from schools that have created faculty emeritus/emerit=
a
programs, and how they have set them up. Specifically, answers to questions
such as these:

- criteria for eligibility
- teaching or consulting expectations, if any
- office space and other perks
- length of term of emeritus/emerita status

Thanks!

Envelope and Invitation Printer for Offices

We are having trouble finding a printer that will print the envelopes and
invitations that we do on a regular basis without smudging and smearing.
Does anyone have a recommendation of an office printer that you use to do
these things successfully?

Re: Best program for webinars

We've been using Adobe Connect Pro and I love it, although it's taken awhile
to learn all the nuances of it. For another venture, I'm using Elluminate
and this service never fails me. It seems to do really well with low
bandwith issues, but the interface in general is clunkier. Finally, I've
also looked at Fuze, and liked many of its features, including
interconnectivity with Facebook and Twitter.

Hope this helps,

Re: Electronic Signatures

All of our enrollment and reenrollment contracts as well as family info she=

The important thing is to include the following text on the forms: YOUR E-S=

We don't require any hard-copy.
