Re: Warning about more Chatroulette Wannabe's

Blocking will never stay ahead of these sites. We need to do our best to =
be aware of these sites. (Thanks for sharing.) We need to continually =
talk to our students, teachers and parents about appropriate use. We =
need to supervise our students and our children.

Blocking gives teachers and parents a false sense of security, gives =
students an "opportunity" to find tools to get around the blocker, and =
gives techs a headache trying to manage what is blocked and unblocked.=20

Let's spend time on talking about why these sites are not good choices =
rather than blocking them and making them more "enticing" for students =
to want to use.=20

Dear Colleagues,

Many of you are already aware of Chatroulette.com and omegle.com as =
sites
designed for visitors to chat with strangers, and sites we probably want
to block at our schools. A writer of a recent article about =
Chatroulette,
which is random video chats with strangers, said that after spending a =
few
hours on Chatroulette he estimated 1 in 5 video chats were of men who =
were
exposing themselves.=20

I wanted to let you know that two similar Chatroulette-wannabe's have =
just
appeared recently and I'm sure there will be more.

http://next.tinychat.com/
Similar to Chatroulette, you can be thrown into a room with strangers =
and
conduct video chats with random people. When you tire of a person, you =
can
simple move onto the next available user in TinyChat's "Lobby".

http://www.popjam.com/
PopJam also released a Chatroulette-like platform, except that is uses
Facebook Connect to randomly send you into a Facebook IM chat with a =
total
stranger.

Never a dull moment,
Doug
