Re: schools with interesting foreign language programs

Jim,
At Cathedral we begin Spanish, French, and Mandarin in Kindergarten. From K
- 3 the students take a trimester of each language. I'm not exactly sure how
it works, but I think they do 20 min. sessions twice a week. I believe this
is the first year that Mandarin is being taught in third grade as it was a
pilot program in K a few years ago and it has been added each year to the
grade levels.

Currently students either French or Spanish at the end of third grade and
take that foreign language through eighth grade. Our school is K-8. I know
there are discussions going on as to whether they will add Mandarin to the
foreign language choices, but I don't think a final decision has been made
yet.

In seventh and eighth grade Latin is added. Most students take French or
Spanish and Latin. A few students take only Latin in seventh and eighth
grade.
