You can also use Drupal to create a fully featured, fully private learning common on your own infrastructure. Unlike Ning, Facebook, or other hosted "solutions" of a similar ilk, you retain complete control over the conditions within which people learn.

Hi!

I teach 7th graders, and some are too young for ning (they'd need to be 13
and up). We use pbworks wikis to mimic aspects of a social network when
doing collaborative projects with other schools (Hi, Steve and Ellen!!!).
You can password-protect it and, if you want, you can also set up accounts
for them that don't require email addresses.
