Re: ISED/Internet Safety Speaker

I have spoken on this topic at many school in the DC/Baltimore area. I
usually bring my own children (now in high school) when we speak to
parents and it gives them a chance to ask questions they can't get
answered at home, it seems. I am asked to speak to students in other
schools as a voice from elsewhere that brings a message they might have
heard in school, but is reinforced by the fact that it comes from
outside. This is surely the appeal of bringing in a speaker.=20

It is important to work with the school and really understand what the
current issues are for them and in the larger community. Hopefully we
are all aware of the findings that debunk the online predator threat as
the primary message, and realize that the focus for our students must be
on their online presence - call it their "digital portfolio" if you
will. My slideshows are shared on the ISENET.ning site and represent the
collaboration among many of our peers and my own research. You are
welcome to use the material!

I'll second (third? fourth?) the suggestion to stay in-house. I have
heard a detective speak to students (not at our school) and his focus
was
scaring kids about what might happen. From the detective's point of
view,
the internet was nothing but a danger and nuisance. The kids (a church
youth group) enjoyed the horror story part of his talk, but I doubt any
of
them thought one word applied to them.

Do you have any faculty that are actively involved in social media?=20
Pairing one of them with your guidance counselor has worked effectively
here.
