Re: Girls avoid "techie stuff"?

Even if you don't agree with Sue Kidd Monk's entire premise, everyone shoul=
d read "The Dance of the Dissident Daughter", as I think she addresses poig=
nantly many of the issues women face in our culture/society.

I think there may be a lot more girls that are interested in "techie stuff"=
than they let on, but I really think peer pressure plays a significant rol=
e in their pursuing their interests. I think some of them really don't wan=
t the boys around them to think they may be smarter than them (not that I'm=
saying they are), or worse, to think they are "geeks". There are a fair n=
umber of girls at my school that could very easily do the techie stuff, and=
when I talk to them about it without other kids around they really tend to=
come alive and seem passionate about the subject, but as soon as another s=
tudent is within earshot (especially a boy) they start back peddling and su=
ddenly classes won't fit into their schedule and their free periods are no =
longer available. I have had a few girls over the past 15 years break out =
of that mold but, sadly, it has only been a few.

When I went for my masters degree a few years ago, there was a 15 boys & 2
girls in one of the technical classes (network stuff).

Meanwhile, over at the information management classes (database management,
ecommerce techniques), the ratio was 50/50.

Generally, I find that there are certain subjects appeal to boys and girls
differently.
