ISED: Race and Rights in the Modern U.S.

Attention Administrators in the Washington DC Metro Area:

Register now for a one-day seminar just for administrators at the=20
University of Maryland in College Park.

"Race and Rights in the Modern U.S." is being offered on November 10,=20
2009 with Professor David Freund.

Seminar description:
While the U.S. has come a long way since the days of the Jim Crow laws=20
and racial segregation, there is still considerable debate over the=20
origins and persistence of racial inequality and what constitutes an=20
appropriate response. Many U.S. citizens have declared Barack Obama=92s=20
election as evidence that equal opportunity for all people has finally=20
been achieved. Others counter that the persistence of discrimination and=20
inequality make that assessment premature.

Participants in this seminar will examine this issue by looking at key=20
moments in the history of race and rights in the U.S., including the=20
modern Civil Rights protest, the popular =93backlash=94 against racial=20
reform, and the ways that public policy has impacted average U.S.=20
citizens. During the seminar, participants will assess some of the=20
powerful institutions and movements that have shaped racial opportunity=20
since the 1940s and discuss teaching materials that would enable=20
middle-school and high-school students to enter and engage in this same=20
debate.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 16, 2009
