I've worked at American schools in Japan, Taiwan,=20
and Brazil. But on the positive side (for all of=20
you wanting to explore the option), there is a=20
serious concern about a shortage of teachers=20
willing to teach internationally so jobs are more=20
plentiful. So, how to get started if you are looking for a non-DODS school?
* Subscribe to TIEonline=20
(http://www.tieonline.com/) to find out about=20
jobs. You can submit through them, or contact the school directly.
* Subscribe to International School Reviews=20
(http://www.internationalschoolsreview.com/) to=20
find reviews about schools. The site won't=20
necessarily reveal the great schools, but it will=20
reveal schools with serious problems. And there are a few.
* If you are really serious, plan on spending=20
some money to attend a recruiting fair unless you=20
land a job before hand. The main U.S. fairs are=20
sponsored by International School Services=20
(http://www.iss.edu/) and Search Associates=20
(http://www.search-associates.com/). If you have=20
a hankering to teach in Latin America, plan on=20
attending the AASSA fair in early December in Atlanta=
(http://www.aassa.com/).
And, naturally, you'll find many more resources=20
online as you search. As a start, the U.S.=20
Department of State Office of Overseas Schools=20
also has information on teaching at=20
http://www.state.gov/m/a/os/c16899.htm, and on=20
some schools at http://www.state.gov/m/a/os/c1684.htm.
But you need to get started now in the process as=20
deadlines for applying for some fairs are only two or three weeks away.
Best of luck and have fun.
