I cannot agree with Peter more about having a source of substitute teachers.
In the Los Angeles area we have Teachers on Reserve, and while not every
sub they send is perfect, some are really great. They do all of the resume
checking, background checks, etc. We can request particular people from them or
take the best they can offer. World language teachers are hardest, I think,
to come by. But having this resource does allow people to stay home if they
are really sick, etc. It's a real boost to faculty morale.
