Re: teachers becoming students for a day

Hi Stewart - this is a powerful bit of professional development for
teachers. I would suggest that you mix the schedule up a bit or
students feel like a teacher is stalking them! I also encourage the
faculty to not treat the visiting teacher as an adult - meaning that
they should sit at a student's desk, shouldn't be allowed to do things
that students aren't (check cell phones, drink coffee in class etc.)
The visiting teacher should also do his or her best not to participate
in class as an adult per se. They should try to follow the student's
experience through the day as closely as they can. They'll be
exhausted!

If you hold a reflection seminar or debriefing session instead of the
last period class, that seems to allow teachers time to regroup and
refresh before any afterschool duties.

Have any of your schools asked that teachers become a student for a day?
They would be a 7th grade kid, sit in classes, go to lunch, recess, etc.
Just curious. Our school is considering requiring this for each teacher
and wondering if any of you have
suggestions, do's, don'ts, etc.... Thanks!
