filtering software in 1-1 program

We have had 1:1's for nine years. We start in 4th grade so there is a
lot of questioning about filtering software. And like you, kids are the
administrators of their laptops. We actually recommend software of a
different sort, specifically e-blaster which some of the parents have
used. It has not interferred with our software installation at all.
Rather than filtering it reports activity on the computer to the
parents. If you can get over the big brother idea, we have advocated for
it instead of fil terst because parents will not rely on the filter to
do their job of staying aware and helping to teach children about what
is appropriate behavior. We instead try to teach parents about Internet
safety at parent coffees as well as when we distribute the laptops.
Children can learn about mistakes they make with this software and there
is opportunity for teaching when they "step outside the fence". We
advocate having the child earn the trust of the parents and that they
monitor less frequently if the child uses good judgement.
