organization (in this case, your school) you can only claim as a
deduction, the amount above and beyond the value of the product or
service you receive.
For example, when you donate to Public Radio and get the lovely NPR
coffee mug, the letter should tell you the value of the mug. Thus, your
charitable gift equals your donation minus the cost of the mug.
I would presume the services they are receiving with regard to
technology exceed the "fee." I'm not a tax attorney (or any type of
lawyer for that matter) but that doesn't sound right to me.
Also, having run programs with both technology fees and fees rolled into
tuition, I prefer tuition. The fee's make technology stick out on the
bill and it effectively says that it is something "other" than your
regular program. It singles it out for parent criticism and treats it
differently than other pieces of critical infrastructure on your campus.
You don't have a Desk and light fee," why a technology fee?
My two cents...

Subject: Tech Fees/Tax Deductions
We were told by a finance person that we should not roll our =20
Technology Fee into our tuition instead that we should apply it as a =20
separate charge as it would be tax deductible.
Our technology fees are as follows for every student:
K-4: $75
5-8: $175
Has anyone heard about this, knows what is the correct tax form, etc.? =20
If this is the case I need to get this information out to our parents.
Thanks!
