1-to-1 and tablet PC's open up possibilities because the resources =20
are decentralized and in the hands of the students, not centralized =20
and available via the teacher providing resources. Starting in =20
middle school also is a good time because of the development stage of =20=
metacognition students are immersed in, that coupled with the use of =20
a laptop or tablet, can enhance and deepen learning/organizing/=20
studying This development of metacognition when laptops were given to =20=
middle schoolers was the focus of my master's thesis and the =20
beginning of my book on laptops.
It's too bad that Powerpoint is the example he may have seen - if you =20=
or he go to http://www.classroom20.com and interact with some of the =20
teachers there, you'll discover some amazing Web 2.0 and emerging =20
technologies that can engage learners tremendously.
I'd suggest you take a trip to Hunterdon Central (I think you're in =20
NJ, correct?) and meet with Rob Mancabelli and see what they are =20
doing with tablets. Perhaps bring the teacher along. He needs to =20
see what's possible because there is so much potential with 1-to-1.
