If you are currently using Moodle at your school would you mind =20
sharing the following (our answers are included):

1. What version are you using?
Version 1.7.1 in production and 1.9.2 in testing

2. What add-ons do you have installed?
Some themes and the WebQuest module. We added some of the extras in the
1.9.2 version to authenticate against AD.

3. How are you currently using it within your school?
Teachers use it optionally. About 60% use it. Some use it really well
and other just post stuff and have discussions. Our Faculty site is
very robust.

4. What requirements do you have for it's use?
No requirements

5. Do you allow outside access (parents/public)?
We have a few sites open to guests.=20

6. What is your Moodle server running on?
SLES 10. I wrote an automated script to make it easy. It is available
at http://docs.moodle.org/en/SUSE_Linux_Server_10

7. Do you host it yourself or do you have it outsourced?
Hosted internally

8. Do you handle support?
Internal.

Re: Moodle Version & Add-ons

Two additional pieces of information that could round this out:

Number of users on the site; and

Server specs (RAM, Processor, Hard drive space and optionally hard drive config (RAID level 0, two SCSI drives, etc).

This is a great discussion -- thanks for bringing this up!

Cheers,

Bill

Our answers are:

1. What version are you using?

1.6.5, but upgrading to 1.9.2 over winter break

2. What add-ons do you have installed?

Turnitin.com and a few themes... will be adding some math filters with
the upgrade.

3. How are you currently using it within your school?

We have all of our class/course in 4-12 online, our primary school is
using it extensively as well. All of our schools administrative
committees as well as Board level committees have "course". School
clubs and activities have spaces if they wish. One of our biggest
uses is in professional development.

4. What requirements do you have for it's use?

Classroom teachers (4-12) are required to post homework and assignments.

5. Do you allow outside access (parents/public)?

No. We only allow access to faulty and students. Those Board members
using Moodle have only access to the "courses" they are enrolled in.

6. What is your Moodle server running on?

Linux CentOS rack mounted server.

7. Do you host it yourself or do you have it outsourced?

Hosted on-site.

8. Do you handle support?

Support is handled by Remote-Leaner.net

Admin Contracts

Dear Colleagues,

Do you use a different type of employment agreement for administrators then
you use for teachers? Currently we use exactly the same one-year contract
for both.

If the administrator employment agreement is different it would be helpful
to know in what ways they differ or to receive an actual copy.

I look forward to hearing from you.

It is easier on the Tech Team to have more centralized printing, but it
is much more supportive of the teachers and students if you can have
printing available in each classroom.

I have worked in both environments, and I found that requiring students
to go outside the classroom to a centralized printer caused loss class
time. It was also harder for the classroom teacher to troubleshoot
printer issues (jams, adding paper, making sure there was ink, etc.) if
the printer was not in their classroom. In addition, the "centralized"
printers were usually in a particular teacher's classroom, and then
there was the disruption to that teacher having students in and out all
day picking up printouts.

At my current location, we have a black and white, networked laser
printer in each classroom. We have a color laser printer in each
building. (Our buildings are small, covering only 4-6 classrooms.) The
black and white laser printers are generally close to the teacher's
desk. The color laser printers are located in a classroom in the center
of a building as close to the entrance door as possible, to reduce
disruption when students come in to pick up printouts.

This works well in that students can quickly print in black and white.
If a printer is having problems for some reason, they can print to the
printer in the next room (discouraged but allowed for emergencies).
Color printing is reduced because it requires them to go out of the
class to get their printouts, so the teachers tend to wait until the
final copy to have them do color.

Re: old large screen monitor/TV

Greetings;

I'm the instructional technologist in a Washington D.C. school in District
6. We have many old TV's on carts, not all teachers have a TV; and only a
few have projectors. If these are DTV that will keep working pass the switch
next year, perhaps you can donate them to us? Just a thought, since you put
it out there.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I'm in the blessed situation of having gotten projectors for some
classrooms that used to have 26-32 inch TV/monitors mounted in them.
Needless to say, they way a ton, but we are getting them down off the
wall and looking for a good way to get rid of them. Any ideas?

Re: old large screen monitor/TV

Check with others in your school as there might be someone that wants a
TV. At our school, they were able to put one of the TVs taken out of
the classroom in a small meeting room and another TV in our resource
room. Both rooms serve small groups, so the TVs worked great in areas
an LCD projector isn't needed.

If no one in your school wants them, check out your local "freecycle"
group. I'm sure you can find a taker that way. THen they won't end up
in the landfill.

Re: old large screen monitor/TV

We put a "free tv" listing in our parent newsletter and had parents that
wanted them.

old large screen monitor/TV

Hi all,

I'm in the blessed situation of having gotten projectors for some
classrooms that used to have 26-32 inch TV/monitors mounted in them.
Needless to say, they way a ton, but we are getting them down off the
wall and looking for a good way to get rid of them. Any ideas?

thanks,

Subject: intro

Hello from middle GA. I'm Tracey Muise and I teach at St. George's
Episcopal School. I'm the middle school dean and only science teacher.
Our school is PK - 8 in a rural area between Macon and Atlanta. This is
my 14th year of teaching middle school science at various indepedent
schools (also Edmund Burke School in DC, Girls Preparatory School in TN
and Episcopal School of Knoxville in TN). I am a "damned yankee" living
in the deep south, bible belt. Even after several years, I'm still
adjusting.

I'm an environmentalist at heart and love pretty much everything outdoor
oriented. I found out about this group from the NMSA list serve Middle
Talk.

Safari Montage

Greetings all,

At Ethical Culture Fieldston School we are evaluating Safari Montage as an
alternative to iMedia.
Are there any schools using Safari Montage?
If so how is it working?

Thanks in advance, Andrea
