Re: Learning Management Systems - Moodle or Sakai?

My comments echo Jonathan's, as Key has had the same set up for the same am=
ount of time.

I will say that while Moodle supports running on IIS and Microsoft SQL Serv=
er, it performs much better under Apache + MySQL, which can both be run on =
Windows if that's more comfortable for your IT staff.

Re: Learning Management Systems - Moodle or Sakai?

We have been using MOODLE for five years. We are very pleased with what it
offers.

For the first 3, we hosted in house on a Linux Server. It was easy to set
up and to manage. I assure you, I had NO linux or php background
previously. 18 months ago we moved to a hosted solution and are using
Remote Learner. They have been responsive and proactive as well. I have
been quite happy with our experience. We pay $1500 for up to 12gb (I think)
of storage. I currently have 800 user accounts.

The only downside I have found is the day time bandwidth issue. While I
don't know what the "cost" is here, it is something to consider. If your
LMS is externally, your Internet pipe has to be dependable.

Re: Learning Management Systems - Moodle or Sakai?

We moved from Blackboard to Moodle two years ago. We host it locally and our teachers and students like it a lot.

I am also on the Board for the Online School for Girls, and we use Haiku LMS for courses. It is not open source but also not expensive, they host it, and we have been very pleased with its ease of use and the company's responsiveness. I'd recommend
taking a look at it.

I hope this helps. Karen

Re: Learning Management Systems - Moodle or Sakai?

Hi Vi,

I have used Sakai and Moodle in different contexts and have little positive
to say about Sakai. Moodle is by far a better LMS in terms of navigation and
integration of other apps. The noted Canadian blogger, Stephen Downes, has
called Sakai "user-hostile" - and I agree.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend a vendor, although I would consider running
Moodle locally if you can spare the resources to customize the environment
to your preferences and needs.

Re: Learning Management Systems - Moodle or Sakai?

I strongly suggest checking out Haiku: http://www.haikulearning.com/

We've built courses for the Online School for Girls using the Haiku LMS
and have been exceptionally pleased with their product and service.
Also, I know that Jason Curtis at Laurel School (also part of OSG) is
using Haiku within the Laurel environment. They are a hosted solution
that is inexpensive. More than 150 web 2.0 technologies can be embedded
into course pages.

Here is a little more about how we are using it at OSG:

Re: Learning Management Systems - Moodle or Sakai?

I would love to see the discussion - also, just curious as to what your
selection depends upon. Sakai is a wonderful system, but geared mostly
towards higher ed while Moodle is also a wonderful system with more
integration capabilities (just because it's been around longer) and
geared toward the K-12 area.

7th session.

Each school group will need a technology coach/cheerleader to support the
experience at his or her school. That person must commit to helping teacher=
s
as needed, monitoring participants' progress and reading and commenting on
their blogs. (I am willing/able to serve as stand in coach for a few
individuals).

The course is approved for 3 PLU / 30 hours for Georgia educators, but many
participants from other states have completed the course for credit as well=
,
according to the rules/guidelines for their school or state. Individuals ar=

Re: Computer Use Ethics

Teaching that ethics and morals apply regardless of the medium (i.e. telephone, email, Facebook, video camera, etc.) would be the best lesson. If they are mature enough, teaching the difference between morals and ethics would be a good idea too. (http://kids.britannica.com/comptons/article-9274216/ethics-and-morality)

Safety should not be conflated with ethics and morality as there are plenty of examples of moral and ethical behavior resulting lack of safety (e.g. MLK, Ghandi, Lincoln, etc.). Remember that evidence continually suggests that personal safety has far less to do with those that deceive than what our students willingly given themselves over too (http://tinyurl.com/ydq2kn5).

This is a much more complicate view of the world, and I don't know of any packaged resources to assist, but supplementing the resources you do find with this will serve your students well in the long run.

Re: Computer Use Ethics

I am a big fan of the Be Cybersmart curriculum. I think it does a great
job of starting young, Kindergarten, with age appropriate lessons.
Every two grade levels, the lessons expand and go into more depth. By
the time you get to 6-8 grade, much is covered about ethics of not just
computers, but also phones, texting, cyberbullying, etc.

You can view the whole curriculum, newly designed this year, using

We are a progressive school as opposed to traditional, and we too have given a great deal of thought to 21st century skills. Our coordinating committee, comprised of department heads, coordinators, division heads and head of school, spent 18 months
immersing ourselves in a variety of texts and articles regarding 21st century skills. We fashioned a list of literacies, skills and sensibilities that we considered crucial to our graduates. From that list, we did a red dot exercise to determine the six
deemed most important by the entire faculty. We formed study groups, now in their third year, for each of these important areas. They are:

Global perspectives

Life Skills

Diversity

Differentiated Instruction

Service Learning

Environmental Sustainability

Membership in these study groups is voluntary. When offered a menu of options, our faculty chose their "passions." To promote shared leadership, each group is led by two teacher facilitators, specifically NOT department chairs. Each study group has
forged a unique path. More importantly, the study groups have become the wellsprings for curricular reflection and change.

Re: 21st Century Skills at Traditional Schools

Greetings all!
=20
If well conceived, everything should flow from a school's Mission =
Statement and Strategic Plan; but how do we know that we are "on track" =
in the 21st century?
=20
One of the books that found its way to the top of my "read now" pile =
over the holidays was Howard Gardner's Five Minds for the Future - =
recommended on this list some time ago. In order to make sense of the =
check-list of 21st century skills in an educational setting, Gardner =
comes up with the following timeline: respect first then discipline (as =
in scholarly ways of thinking), synthesis and ethics with lots of =
creativity (including groups) along the way. Within these constructs, =
perhaps tradition will embrace and provide a context for change.

I am appreciating the recent information/questions/suggestions =

-managing complexity/problem solving

21st Century Skills at Traditional Schools

We are a progressive school as opposed to traditional, and we too have give=
n a great deal of thought to 21st century skills. Our coordinating committe=
e, comprised of department heads, coordinators, division heads and head of =
school, spent 18 months immersing ourselves in a variety of texts and artic=
les regarding 21st century skills. We fashioned a list of literacies, skill=
s and sensibilities that we considered crucial to our graduates. From that =
list, we did a red dot exercise to determine the six deemed most important =
by the entire faculty. We formed study groups, now in their third year, for=
each of these important areas. They are:

Global perspectives

Life Skills

Diversity

Differentiated Instruction

Service Learning

Environmental Sustainability

Membership in these study groups is voluntary. When offered a menu of optio=
ns, our faculty chose their "passions." To promote shared leadership, each =
group is led by two teacher facilitators, specifically NOT department chair=
s. Each study group has forged a unique path. More importantly, the study g=
roups have become the wellsprings for curricular reflection and change.

Re: Computer Use Ethics

I used to use this book, but it's in need of an update:
http://www.amazon.com/Internet-Computer-Ethics-Kids-Teachers/dp/0962870056.
If you poke around Amazon, you'll find a slew of other titles as well. I
think ISTE publishes a few on related topics, specifically.

Computer Use Ethics

As the age of students who use computers regularly during their
personal time for social networking, youtube, etc. continues to

Re: 21st Century Skills at Traditional Schools

I am appreciating the recent information/questions/suggestions concerning
21st century skills. Toward the end of the 08-09 school year my Department
Chairs and I comprised a list of 21st century 'skills' that we thought
needed to be incorporated and/or re-introduced in our curriculum. Here was
the list:

-thinking critically
-thinking creatively
-appreciation for the arts
-managing complexity/problem solving
-communicating effectively
-integrating technology
-managing time effectively
-promoting teamwork
-developing character

Are we missing anything? Are we tackling too much by working on so many
skills at the same time? Any suggestions or comments would be
appreciated.....

Thanks in advance,

Dear Colleagues,

I am working on a project that considers how independent schools that
promise a "traditional" experience have positioned themselves relative
to the 21st century schools, skills, and values movement. Please
reply off list if you have observations on any of the following:

1. What tactics, programs, or policies labeled 'traditional' at your
school contribute most to 21st century success?
2. Have some curricular or pedagogical approaches once seen as a
strength required revision or enhancement in light of changes in
university expectations of our graduates and the economic climate our
