Re: Tweet "tweet"

If you are referring to action similar to tweeting someone (a short,
self-contained message) without specific reference to the service/company then
yes it would be appropriate to use quotes. Referring specifically to Twitter
and the action they allow you to take through their site and service, then no.

Example 1:
I sent my neighbor a tweet, after they double parked me for the 2nd time this
week, asking them to be more considerate.

Example 2:
I spray painted an expletive laden "tweet" on my neighbor's car after they
double parked me for the 5th time this week.

Re: livescribe pens

They are the best! I've seen the pen demonstrated by students with learning
disabilities who say they couldn't live without them. For the money, you
couldn't ask for a more life-changing invention.

Please see the reviews and video on my website about Livescribe (

grade groups, iTunesU content, 21st c. libraries

That's interesting that edutopia is launching grade level groups. ISEnet
already has them. They haven't seen much action yet, but I continue to think
this is an area ripe for development. At a certain point they'll reach a
critical mass.
http://isenet.ning.com/groups/group/listByLocation?location=gradelevels

another topic, Bill F. asked a good question about the NAIS iTunesU site...
he asked whether the content is licensed with a CC sharing license. As I
understand it, because the content is being pulled from many different
schools, the intellectual property rights remain with the schools/content
creators. Uses beyond viewing the videos (and fair use of small snippents)
would require permission from the content creators.

Lastly I am curious what your library is doing to embrace digital content
and anytime/where access?

Interesting week for our public school colleagues

Many public school educators feel that they were thrown under the bus this
week in NBC's Education Nation series and in the new movie "Waiting for
Superman."

Larry Ferlazzo has collected a number of blog posts from educators on this
subject here:
http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/2010/09/26/the-best-posts-articles-about-the-teacher-bashing-waiting-for-superman-movie-associated-events/

Will Richardson, who many of you know and follow, was disturbed enough by
the events to write this blog post:
http://weblogg-ed.com/2010/the-wrong-conversations/

From my perspective, one of the more positive responses to the events is
this brief history of the US education system put together by Ira Socol:
http://speedchange.blogspot.com/2010/09/designed-to-fail-education-in-america.html

Finally, if you haven't had a chance to read Diane Ravitch's "The American
School System" this brief video covers some of her main points:

VoiceBox

Hello, all,

I've mentioned this project a few times over the last few months, and I wanted
to post an update because, at long last, an Alpha release is ready.

VoiceBox is a community media/feed aggregator/news space/conversation space. A
high level run down of the featureset includes:

* Customizable user profiles;
* Discussions with embedded images, audio, and video;
* Publishing pictures, audio, and video via mobile devices and/or email;
* Content aggregation via rss;
* Remixing, curating, and republishing content within issues;
* Sharing content to eternal sites or via email; and
* Slideshows of featured content on the site homepage and selected landing
pages.

It's built in Drupal, and is free to use, adapt, and modify as you see fit.

The code is available at http://code.funnymonkey.com/project/voicebox
The project on drupal.org is at http://drupal.org/project/voicebox
Project documentation is at http://code.funnymonkey.com/doc/voicebox
And, a more detailed announcement is at
http://funnymonkey.com/community-media-grassroots-outreach-voicebox

The project was funded by the Knight Foundation, and we're pretty excited to see
what people make with this.

Cheers,

Bill

A few more that are particularly practical in their approach:

Andrew Watt's blog <http://andrewbwatt.wordpress.com/> is combination of

Beyond School <http://beyond-school.org/>
Blogging About the Web 2.0 Connected
Classroom<http://web20classroom.blogspot.com/>
Prof. Hacker <http://chronicle.com/blog/ProfHacker/27/> (aimed at higher

Edutopia.org has some great communities geared for grade level and subject-level
educators.

They will also be launching landing pages geared for specific grade level later
this week.

Their community is at http://www.edutopia.org/groups

Hi -

I'd appreciate your recommendations...

I am helping a group of faculty members to develop personal learning
networks. The beginning of our work involves encouraging them to read blogs
regularly (something they don't do right now), and that's where I could use
your advice.

I'd like to compile a short list of great blogs for them. I'd like to find
blogs that make suggestions about lesson plans, pedagogy, or simple web
sites to use -- suggestions that these teachers could apply immediately in
their classrooms with very little fuss. For the most part, these teachers
are not entirely comfortable with technology, so I'm _not_ looking for blogs
that are primarily about technology.

Here are their interest areas. If you have a short list of favorite blogs in
these areas, please send them along:

Blogs containing...
* Lesson plans, teaching approaches, web sites...
* Concerning reading, mathematics, language arts, Spanish/French...
* For grades 1 and 5-9

Thanks!

Purchasing mailing lists for Mailings

Dear Admissions Directors and Independent School Educators,

In our community, because there are no child-centered publications for teens
or parents of teens,
we have a difficult time reaching families of 11-17 year olds who don't come
from one of the known
feeder schools in our area. Reaching parents of children in public schools
is especially difficult.

To reach a wider audience directly, we are considering purchasing a list
and doing either an email or physical post card mailing
to families in our area (specifying zip code, income levels, and children's
ages).

If any of you have purchased such lists, could you give me some feedback on
specific providers or sources that you
have used that you might recommend?

I will be happy to share any information that I gather with others.

Challenge for Developers, Apps for Tablets...

thought some of you might be interested in Marvell's announcement,
either from the side of someone that has an idea for an app, or for
all those watching to see what tablets do for K-12

guy

-------
09/27 11:15 Marvell to Fund Next Generation Education Apps

Marvell announces $100,000 application developer competition
to bring revolutionary new education applications to classrooms
around the world

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In its ongoing commitment to
improving America's education system through the adoption of new
technology, Marvell, one of the world's largest chipmakers,
announced today that it's launching a competition to recognize
and fund the most clever new education apps for classroom tablets.
The challenge invites ambitious, intelligent software developers
around the world to create apps that transform the way students
learn. Three winners will share prize money totaling $100,000,
along with access to Marvell's considerable engineering resources
for support and testing.

The $100K Challenge, unveiled at the NBC News' Education Nation
summit, is a part of Marvell's Mobylize campaign, the company's
long-range commitment to mobilizing technology innovation,
speeding education innovation and bringing to students everywhere
the inexpensive yet powerful tools they need to learn, connect
and collaborate in new ways.

The campaign and the $100K Challenge were inspired by Marvell's
new Moby tablet reference design. The classroom-friendly Moby
tablet reference design is a high-performance, low-power device
based on Marvell's ARMADA(TM) application processor and Google's
Android(TM) operating system. It's the platform for which
developers who enter the $100K Challenge will design their
applications -- and it's perfect for the part. It's equipped with
1080p HD, advanced 3D capabilities and full Flash internet. For
developers, the Moby tablet reference design provides far-reaching
possibilities. For students, it opens vast horizons, at a price
school districts can afford.

"Our aim is to revolutionize the delivery of education in
America," said Tom Hayes, Vice President of Corporate Marketing
at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. "We believe this contest will help
focus the immense talents of software developers on e-learning
initiatives, resulting in new ways for students, parents, teachers
and administrators to communicate, collaborate and advance
education."

Judges in the $100K Challenge are looking specifically for
applications that can be used in teaching math, science,
vocabulary, spelling and other courses common from kindergarten
to 12th grade. Application should feature an online component,
connecting to the web for the best user experience. It should
enable opportunities for social learning, so students can easily
collaborate with other students. It should offer support for many
languages, reflecting the diversity in schools around the world.
It should leverage the Moby tablet reference design's multitouch
interface. And the application's size should be less than 512MB.

Developers interested in entering the contest should log on to
www.mobylize.org for initial entry guidelines. Submissions will
be accepted October 10, 2010 through November 10, 2010, after
which each application will be evaluated by an independent panel
of judges, who are selected based on their accomplishments in the
fields of technology and education.

Winners will be announced at a reception sponsored by Marvell at
the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, January 6 through 9, 2011 in
Las Vegas. The grand- prize winner will receive $50,000, with
$30,000 going to second place and $20, 000 to third. All winners
will enjoy the support of Marvell's extensive engineering
infrastructure on the way to finalizing their apps.

Re: Instructional Videos - NAIS iTunesU site

Hello, Demetri,

What are the licensing terms on the videos?

Can they be remixed and incorporated into other open content initiatives?

I'm hoping that the answer to the first question is "Creative Commons
Non-Comercial Attribution Share Alike," which would make the answer to the
second question "Yes."

Cheers,

Bill

Subject: Instructional Videos - NAIS iTunesU site

As it pertains to Fred's recent post about instructional videos, NAIS
is in the process of developing an iTunesU site comprised of member
schools' videos that includes a section titled "What we teach and
learn." If you want to take a look, browse to this URL:
http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/nais.org This
requires the iTunes application -- the URL launches iTunes and brings
you to the site. (Once the site is public, it will be more easily
accessible.) The "What we teach & learn" section is on the bottom of
that iTunesU page. It is divided into subject and topic areas, and may
become more granular as more video assets are added over time.

I'm involved in supporting this effort, and NAIS is interested in
having more schools participate. If anyone has videos that illustrate
great lessons (or other aspects of independent school life), I'd
encourage you to contact Paul Miller, Director of Global Initiatives
at NAIS. Please also feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks,
Demetri

Vipre Antivirus

Our Network Administrator is evaluating Vipre Antivirus which we would
use in place of our existing McAfee Enterprise. I found a couple of
posts on the topic from about a year ago, but I was hoping someone out
there has some more recent information. If you use this Vipre Antivirus
please feel free to share any information (on or off list - your choice)

We are running mostly XP machines but we are planning to start adding
Win7 machines next summer. If you have any experience with Vipre

support team has been responsive, and if is it catching most of the bad
stuff. Thanks,
