Re: Computer Use Ethics

Teaching that ethics and morals apply regardless of the medium (i.e. telephone, email, Facebook, video camera, etc.) would be the best lesson. If they are mature enough, teaching the difference between morals and ethics would be a good idea too. (http://kids.britannica.com/comptons/article-9274216/ethics-and-morality)

Safety should not be conflated with ethics and morality as there are plenty of examples of moral and ethical behavior resulting lack of safety (e.g. MLK, Ghandi, Lincoln, etc.). Remember that evidence continually suggests that personal safety has far less to do with those that deceive than what our students willingly given themselves over too (http://tinyurl.com/ydq2kn5).

This is a much more complicate view of the world, and I don't know of any packaged resources to assist, but supplementing the resources you do find with this will serve your students well in the long run.

Subject: Computer Use Ethics

As the age of students who use computers regularly during their personal time for social networking, youtube, etc. continues to decrease, it is becoming increasingly important to teach both safety and ethics with regards to personal computer usage. Does anyone have or know of any resources for content specific to teaching this?

Thanks so much,
