Re: color printer rec ... Summercore 2010

We have the HP Color Laser Printer 3600n on our lower school network and =
have been very pleased with it. Don't forget to budget for replacement =
toner cartridges. If we are careful, we can get by on one set of =
cartridges for a school year, along with one extra black cartridge just =
in case we use more black. The cartridge prices run from about $110 to =
$137 on www.think4inc.com, which is usually a good place to find good =
prices on ink. I think the prices were somewhat lower last summer when =
I ordered cartridges. I have found that we do better on ink usage if =
the students have to ask permission to print something or have to be =
given permission to print as a class. I don't allow students to print =
out web pages because that can use a lot of ink. They must take notes =
on information from the web pages, which they should be doing anyway, or =
if they need to print out something like a poem they must highlight the =
poem only, copy, and paste it into a Word document before printing. We =
use Accelerated Reader, so I make sure that the TOPS report that can be =
set up to print after each child's AR test is disabled. If multiple =
copies are needed, such as tests or worksheets, we make one copy from =
the computers to the printer, then make copies on the copy machine =
because it is cheaper to operate.

We at The Children's Storefront now have enough pennies to buy a network
color printer! Does anyone know the market well enough to recommend a
mid-range color printer (under 100,000 pennies) that keeps the cost down
per color print. Thanks MUCH in advance for any advice ... Steve

p.s. the two "open to everyone" Summercores in 2010 are at Horace Mann
School NYC July 12-16, 2010 and in Tampa FL July 26-30, 2010 ... we are
also seeking to conduct a third Summercore on the road, perhaps at YOUR
school ... please contact me off the listserv if you want more info

Berkeley Carroll School in NYC and Summercore '91 and '08 alum who then

"Steve and Lynne at Summercore do an incredible job of addressing the
different levels of all participants. At my session we had individuals
ranging from very reluctant, very occasional users to someone who was =
the
head of IT for a university. At the end of the week each person said it
was the best workshop they had ever attended. Of even greater value is =
to
see Steve and Lynne in action. Yes the week is about technology
integration, and you learn tons about that, but you also get to see two
master teachers at work and everyone sees how to be an even more =
effective
teacher."
