Re: Using Facebook for classroom projects

Hi Lynn,

You might try using a "ning." A ning has all the benefits of social networking like Facebook, but the privacy issues are much easier to manage. We are currently using a ning for our 9th grade to build class spirit and communicate about 9th grade events
and programs.

In an academic context, teachers can set up a ning for a special project so students can create pages using an identity other than their own, which of course they can't do via Facebook. For example, each student can be one member of the Constitutional
Convention (and then they have to figure out who should "friend" whom, based on states rights vs. federalism), or students can make pages for characters in a novel or play (again, who would friend whom, and why?).

Good luck!
Liz
