Hi All,
We implemented Google Apps for Ed about a year ago, branding it to use
as
our internal portal at Sanford School (JK-12). We migrated our email
from
Exchange successfully with few problems. Staff and faculty while
initially
reluctant, have embraced it. We do collaborative sharing of documents
and
spread sheets both with students in the classroom and for the
administrative
team.
At opening meetings this year, we did in-house professional development
sessions offering support and training on Google Apps, along with our
new
student information system (SIS). We use branded Google Sites, linking
out
from our SIS, because the teachers find it so user friendly and easy to
use.
In the past, we used Blackboard but this combination seems to be
working
well for us.
We debated the ownership issues every school needs to consider when
making
such a switch but it's hard to ignore the cost savings. It also offered
immediate options such as new calendaring features and the ability to
push
out to mobile devices that my small staff could never hope to develop or
maintain. We did upgrade our bandwidth but are still using less than
many
local area schools and doing well providing reliable services for an
affordable cost.
It was a good move for us, allowing my staff more time to focus on
support
for classroom faculty, administrative users, and other in-house IT
functions.
