Re: Web Blocker

Tim,

I just finished an evaluation of the 8e6 product and found it did function =
for both internal and mobile clients. However, the implementation seemed a=
bit heavy and pricey, requiring a vendor supplied hardware device for both=
internal client filtering/reporting and a second for the mobile clients. =
What I found interesting was that the mobile client proxied the requests ov=
er the Internet to the second external facing 8e6 device. There was an op=
tion to allow or deny a mobile client if the client was unable to contact t=
he proxy. Seems you would want to deny so the mobile user could not bypass=
the proxy, so this implementation demands the school Internet connection a=
nd 8e6 device remain accessible at all times.

The chosen solution was from SmoothWall (www.smoothwall.net) using their Sc=
hool Guardian product with the Mobile Guardian client software for student =
netbooks. The Mobile Guardian client runs as a service and proxies all req=
uests based on a local copy of the filtering rules it received from the sin=
gle internal filtering/reporting device. You can install it as a vendor su=
pplied appliance, or load a virtual machine on your hardware. Filter updat=
es and logs are exchanged when the mobile clients are connected to the scho=
ol network.

Let me know if you like to see it in action (I'm just down the street from =
you).

Thanks,

Hello All-

Has anyone had any experience with 8e6 web blocker or pure wire web blocker=
? we are looking for a mobile web blocker for blocking and recording web l=
ogs while our computers are off campus. I'd appreciate any advice you may =
