year with an all-school assembly where the President of the Board, and
the Division Heads offer brief welcoming remarks. Then the Head of
School talks to everyone about the origin of the handshake and with that
the faculty and administration are excused to line up along a walkway
outside. The seniors are called out in order of tenure at the school and
they proceed along the line of faculty, shaking hands with everyone.
They get at the end of the line of faculty and the rest of the school,
from 11th grade down to Kindergarten (PK children don't participate in
this) proceed through the line shaking hands with everyone ending with
the seniors. Then everyone goes immediately to wash their hands! It is a
truly wonderful way to begin the year!=20

Subject: Official opening of school tradition?
Hello,
We are revising our opening of school ceremony here and I'm looking for
an official "this starts school" type tradition. Ringing a bell, cutting
a ribbon, etc. Something done in an assembly as students watch. If you
have a tradition to share, please reply off-list. Thanks!
