school opening with a distinctive San Francisco flavor. It is one of
he sweetest school traditions I have ever witnessed. The school has
an excellent music program using Orff instruments. Every student in
the school plays instruments throughout every year but on the first
day of school the teachers play as the children enter the assembly
room. Families and children gather on the play yard and at 8:30 they
enter the room by passing through a ribbon arch created and held by
the eighth grade class.
Once everyone has gathered every new family in the school is
introduced, there is a short period of singing and the eighth graders
create the arch again- this time at the door that leads from the
assembly room to the front hall. The new kindergarteners, the
youngest class in the school, exits under the arch held by the oldest
students in the school.
