Re: Website host

Bernadette:

There are advantages and disadvantages to hosting versus collocation
versus in-house hosting. I am of the opinion that having mission
critical communication tools that may be bandwidth intensive out of
house (whether hosted or colocated).

Having said that, let me offer another bit of advice. If you are
hosting/collocating the equipment, choose a reputable company that
offer a clearly defined service level agreement (SLA). Given your
current experiences, a well defined SLA would at least give the
institutional some financial recourse for service outages.

A good hosting or collocation facility should include multiple
Internet connections from different providers to guard against
connectivity disruptions. It should also include (at the very least)
power redundancy via an nearline generator (as well as local UPS) and
HVAC redundancy. I would also look at the SLA regarding hardware
replacement. Typically, you would want something less than 4 hours
(the less time, the higher the cost).

Just some other things to consider when you are hunting through the
various options.
