Re: Office 2007 Assessment Tool and Videos

We also made the switch 2 years ago. It was really very painless (for most)=
. I offered many "Orientation" sessions. I was very clear about this- if yo=
u did not know how to print with Office 2003 entering the room, you would n=
ot know how to print with Office 2007 when you exited the room. It was simp=
ly 1 hour of where everything went and of course, how to use the extensive =
help feature included in MS Office. These were voluntary and many attended.=
I even had 1 who attended 4 times but that is another story.

Now, as this was optional and I did not want lack of attendance to be an is=
sue when people had problems. So, I also created a series of videos and pos=
ted them on Youtube. These covered many of the main areas that would be imp=
ortant to getting quickly acquainted with Office 2007. I had many who did n=
ot come to the sessions but used the videos. I did not provide sessions to =
the students but did supply them with links to the videos and made myself a=
vailable at the start of school. It was amazing how easily they adapted to =
the new environment.

There is a third group- those who just figured it out on their own then cam=
e to me with questions that would have been beyond where the rest of the fa=
culty and staff were and would not have been covered in the orientation ses=
sion. The final group were those who shared a specific job function where t=
heir use of the tools required a special session. These were individuals wh=
o performed tasks that most in the school did not need to worry about. This=
mix of approaches worked well as everyone could select the method the met =
their specific needs.

Oh, in case you were wondering, the videos are still online so feel free to=
use them. I have been surprised by the wide viewing these videos have rece=
ived global. One of them even has over 11,000 views-not viral but give a gu=
y a break, it is a video about Office 2007 :). Now there are many other vid=
eos out there as well so you might search for skills that you will need tha=
t are not covered in this collection.

Re: Office 2007 Assessment Tool

We made that move two years ago. Those it looks different to start=2C it's=
very easy to move. We had an hour overview for everyone=2C and most did f=
ine. Some actually liked it better because it was so visual. A helpful re=
source is the getting started tab that you can download to add to the tabs =
of each program. It lets you see where you found the command in the older =
version and shows you were to find it now--very helpful.

AVG does have a small / medium business product, and supports Windows-based=

Re: Laptop Security software

Hi,

1. It depends on whether you can afford the software in the first place.
Not every school has a lot of money to invest in protection of their
property.

If we were to protect a 120 laptops using CompuTrace, it would cost my
school $6,000. To have something with similar features, you can use the
Orbicule Undercover for $20 to cover 200 laptops. For some schools, $6,000
is a lot of money they can use elsewhere to improve the school's use of
technology.

2.
Start a criminal investigation:
Without the camera feature, the publicity of it all could lead to greater
damage to the school. Let say that the photo option is not available. We
would be able to acquire the IP address, go to the police with the IP #, get
a court warrant to subpoena the ISP for the address linked to the IP, and
have the police charge the person (possibly a student) publicly with grand
larceny ($1000+, felony).

Start an in-house private investigation:
With the camera, you can handle the issue in house without going public. We
want to create alumni that is proud of going to our school, and someday they
will donate money back into our school when they become successful leaders.

Which is the better path? Criminal investigation or in house private
investigation?

I'm sure the potential for tech staff to abuse the camera is there. I'm
also sure the tech staff have the ability to go through every students
emails and files, but I'm sure the tech staff have something else better to
do such as solving the trouble tickets that pops up everyday at school or
using technology to improve the education at the school.

Besides, the "capture the thief" feature should only be enabled when there
is a problem. If the camera feature is enabled on the laptop that has been
taken away from the school without permission (aka stolen), does the thief
have any rights to personal privacy? Having a camera maybe like owning a
gun. There is potential for misuse, but guns can also protect your family
or feed them.

Re: Laptop Security software

Hi Bruce,

For the Mac, we had a situation with a missing laptop.

Inexpensive: Orbicule Undercover.
http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/
They have a volume license for education ($10/100 computers). It was
cheaper than CompuTrace ($50+/3 years). This has a lot of the same features
as the CompuTrace.

JAMF Casper Suite (Mac Mgmt Tool): (~$17/computer/year)
This is not a laptop recovery tool because it was made to be a Mac mgmt tool
(Altiris for the Mac essentially). The notebook calls home every once in a
while to look for policy changes or updates. We can acquire the IP address,
and contact the police in this matter. In our situation, we were able to

Laptop Security software

Folks, you always come up with good solutions.

This is my first time to jump in with a question.
I am the Tech Specialist fro St. George's Independent School, Memphis, TN
Last year at Lausanne's Laptop Institute someone told me about a website
that had an open source solution that you could use for security purposes. I
have misplaced that note.

I am looking for software that could be installed that would help locate a
stolen computer. I need it as we begin to image computers for next year.

It actually could not be deleted by a thief that lifted a computer and would
take a picture with the built-in camera if needed. Then, It would send it
back information to the owner.

You seem to be a good source of good open source solutions....so...

Have you run across a solution that would work on a Mac that is Open source?
Since we are an urban campus we have had some laptops walk right out of the

Re: Antivirus Solution

We use Sophos (www.sophos.com). I've been using them for 6 years now
and am very happy with it. The client is multi-platform (Windows,
Mac, Linux) and all is controlled by one server. Handles updates to
laptops that roam on and off campus quite easily. Very little
overhead load on the client.

Antivirus Solution

All,

We currently use Symantec's most recent product. However, the overhead the
software requires on the client side is incredibly demanding. To the point
where it interferes/conflicts with other running applications.
I'd like to get some idea of what other schools use for an enterprise-wide
antivirus solution. An application that can manage file, email and web

doesn't place such huge demands on the machine.

Inventory software

Hi everyone,

I searched the archives and didn't find the right kind of match for my
question. I'm looking for recommendations for inventory software in high
turnover environments, such as laptop programs where movable components such
as DVD drives and power cords will likely be replaced within or among
units. We currently use Track-It and use the Library feature to track
items. I'm looking for something that not only provides an easy way to
enter and track assets but also provides a history of where items, such as
laptops, were allocated within the organization. Bonus points for the
person who can also tie this to service requests and user initiated helpdesk
calls.

Any recommendations?

Re: Job Opening - Instructional Technology Specialist (0.5 FTE)

Not much, as it is part time and in MA, but here is a lead. Long commute, though.

Re: Permission forms for field trips

Michael,

We send parents/guardians a form entitled Missouri Military Academy's
Permission Questionnaire. It consists of 15 yes/no questions. One of the
questions asks if parents/guardians give permission for their son to attend
educational field trips, sometimes mixed with entertainment. We also
indicate that the cost to the school is often passed on to parents.

Can anyone share?

A couple of years ago, seniors at my school played what I think is the best
prank ever: they switched places with seniors from our so-called rival school.
Our teachers walked into first period classes to find unknown kids, each of whom
was playing a senior actually in the class. The "imposters" knew the name of the
kids they were playing and had even learned some distinctive behavioral
characteristics. They spent two periods and assembly with us (as our kids did
with them) and then everybody switched back. It was fantastic.

Bill Ivey's point -- "WA gets the copyright on the correlation even though I'm the one who thought up the terms being correlated, on the grounds their machine did the research at that point?" -- as well as Jason's contributions seem especially relevant here --

WA isn't capable of doing *anything* without input. Yet, it claims copyright over its response, and WA appears to be setting up rules/guidelines under which people will need to attribute WA in order to follow these copyright guidelines.

It's interesting the parallels between this and the attempts of many mainstream media outlets (especially AP) to restrict access to content that AP makes freely available over the web, including via RSS.

It's also worth noting that the threat of a lawsuit can often act as a deterrent, even if the actual lawsuit is unwinnable. The process of getting tied up in court can cripple smaller organizations being sued by larger ones -- one can look at the record of Tobacco Companies suing County Public Health departments, or, for an example closer to education, at the BB vs D2L debacle.

So, WA is a notable entry into the arena, both for the service it offers and for the way it attempts to carve it's niche in the market. In short, these terms feel like an IP land grab.

Cheers,

Bill

Academically they should provide credit (which they generally do) but then it goes quickly into the murky waters of copyrighting derivative works and fair use. Regardless of credit, copyright refers to legal ownership. They would argue that you don't own it because their analysis is transformative. They would still be happy to give you credit and a bill for the license to use their analysis of your data :-)

I think the most important part of the Groklaw analysis was :
"And the meaning of all this? No. Not 42. It means Wolfram|Alpha will never replace Google. "

Hi!

So in your example, WA gets the copyright on the correlation even though I'm
the one who thought up the terms being correlated, on the grounds their
machine did the research at that point? Shouldn't we at a minimum share
credit for the work?

Take care,
