their two cents. =20
We recently had to address the same question, although in a broader context
that includes staff who leave, seniors who are now alumni, etc.
Regarding retired faculty:
* While faculty may have used the School=B9s e-mail system for over a decade,
we shut off their accounts on October 1st. (We also allow our new alumni
the same access until they are set-up at college or with another e-mail
account.)=20
* We remind faculty that the School owns the e-mail and there is no
expectation of privacy. Retired members often forget this small legal
detail.=20
* Furthermore, we encourage web based e-mail to them such as Google for
support issues. (You may move to Florida or to Europe and how can the
School support you with your e-mail at this point?)
* Often the issue with retired colleagues is their fear of losing touch.
They believe retraining an e-mail account will keep them on a various posts
and distribution lists. However, it is not appropriate for them to see thi=
s
type of information. Student privacy laws also can make such access
illegal. Instead, we are working on a portal that is on the same lines as
our alumni site for retired members. We want them to stay in touch but not
give them access to everything.
