years of teaching / outside experience translation

My business manager asked me to post the following question. When someone
who has changed careers is hired as a teacher by your school, do you gave
any credit for non-teaching employment experiences if your salary
structure takes into consideration years of experience. In other words,
say an actuary is hired as a math instructor. How is this individual's
previous employment experience factored into a salary offer? Any thoughts
on or off the listserv would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Donald
