impression that this was copyright infringement. I could be way off on this, but my
interpretation of the copyright law is that a copy cannot be transferred to DVD
period. Even if the original tape is destroyed, that still does not change
the fact that someone changed the original format of the video (from
videotape to DVD). The materials can be used until the tape wears out or breaks. The
exception would be if your videotape is on the verge of destruction and there
is no other format available. I base my information on the archives at
LM-Net _http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/_ (http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/) and Carol
Simpson's, Copyright for Schools: A Practical Guide, 4th Ed. p. 88.
Please let me know what you all find out.
I will tell you that I have a simple Sony DVD-RW with a VHS recorder so I
can play both formats. I have recorded a "Cable in the Classroom" program on
VHS tape (using fair use practices) and then transfer to a DVD so a teacher
can pop it in the laptop without having to borrow a VCR. But there is no
high-speed dubbing.

Has anyone changed their video libraries to dvds? Our librarian has
checked into copyright laws and said it is legal to do so as long as the
school destroys the video after the copy is made. What did you use to
make the conversion? We have an extensive library so high speed is a
must.
