We installed RT on an externally-hosted server last June. We use it for
tracking both technology and maintenance requests. Users can submit
tickets by email or through the web interface, and can view current or
past tickets online. It's very powerful and customizable, but simple
enough for all our IT and maintenance guys to handle. It did take a bit
of work to get it running the way we wanted it to, but there's a book
out that is very helpful.=20

Kathy,
We had a good session on help desks at the NYSAIS NEIT 2007 Conference.
Here's a link to the session notes:

The two help desks we discuss were RT and Web Help Desk. RT is open
source, so it's definitely less expensive.
I would also direct you to the School Computing Wiki where I'm sure
there are a number of good resources.
