The "Watershed" program at Radnor Middle School near Philadelphia is an
exemplary example of an integrated curriculum built on an environmental
theme. The book, "Watershed," by Mark Springer is available on the
National Middle School Association website. They are also used to frequent
visitors, and have a number of clone programs internationally.
My old school, Pine Cobble School in Williamstown, MA, has an
extraordinary PK-7 science teacher, Stephen Stroud, who weaves
environmental issues and principles throughout his curriculum. The sixth
grade researches migratory bird patterns and designs, maintains, and
expands on a bird garden on campus, the fourth grade does a lot of work
with wetlands (in at least some years, I believe their observations were
shared and coordinated through appropriate federal agencies) and gathers
each "Big Night" to watch the salamanders migrate and protect them at the
road crossing, and so on. He might be a great resource for you as well.
Take care,
