Re: After school supervision

Please keep this conversation public. We are struggling with this issue.
We are a coeducational day/boarding school for 440 students in grades 5-12
in Wheeling, WV. We charge nothing for after school care / supervision.
Students generally collect in the school's main point of entry or in the
library nearby. Some students stay up to three hours after the school day
ends. Several day students each week actually join boarding students for
dinner.

We are growing increasingly concerned about the absence of accountability
and controls on our students' coming and going. Particularly worrisome are
the implications of this void for younger students.

Yet, solving the problem has been difficult. How do schools keep track of
where students should be, then hold them accountable for being there? Take
just one 6th grade student who has piano lessons off campus immediately
after school on Monday, then goes to soccer practice on campus on Tuesday,
then hangs out in the school building on Wednesday and Thursday, then gets
picked up by her grandmother on Friday. This is one child of a few hundred.
We return to the fundamental question--is the goal to keep all children
accounted for each day from the moment school ends until they are safely
home? Is the goal to keep the school building quiet and safe? We could use
some blueprints that offer logistical solutions to these challenges. We
seem to be in no short supply of good ideas, but action plans involving
their execution always seem to present snags.

Subject: After school supervision

We are a small girls' day school in Atlanta. At the
present time, we have a supervised after school
program for any Middle School student. We charge $10
per day up to 6:00PM and $1 a minute after 6:00PM.
Our question is: do other school provide supervised
afterschool programs of any kind for high school
students?
Are coaches required to stay with the team members
until all are picked up?
Is there a school administrator on campus until all
students are picked up?
