Re: ISED-L

Our decision was based on a lack of funds. It was either find the
money or reduce services. Turning our email system into a student
spam machine was deemed non-essential so we reduced services.

Re: Drawing programs

Adding to Fred's post on SketchUp, my website has a free teacher guide with
suggested SketchUp projects for various age groups and subjects (math,
design, geography, etc.)

http://www.3dvinci.net/teacherguide/

(Of course I should add that my site also has design project books and
geometry project books, all based on SketchUp.)

Oh for a program that would provide the wonderfully integrated
functionality that AppleWorks provided 20 years ago. Sometimes I wonder
about progress.

Another idea for a drawing program is to start them in a 3D environment
early. Google SketchUp is free, available for Macs and Windows, is VERY
easy to learn, and has a huge support infrastructure, so if kids develop
an interest in 3D drawing there are lots of resources to nourish that
interest.

Re: Reliable Backup Solution

I too was never jazzed about BE. I am a former Retrospect user for years,
but with all the turmoil there as they did feature parity between Windows
Servers and Mac servers and their problematic ways they dealt with linux
clients, I pulled it (circa 2004ish). I am sure it is better now. Also, I
did like the functionality of their backup server and client specifically
for floating laptops. We had many people with laptops and when they popped
on the network, the client would register as present with Retro and ask to
start backup for the user. Nice stuff and nothing I have seen since has been
that good. I did pull retro eventually and went with Arkeia (
http://www.arkeia.com/) which was extremely solid for servers and my Oracle
databases at the time).

I am running Symantec Backup Exec and it is pretty good. It is just the 800
pound gorilla now and workable. Arcserve is another, but I would steer clear
of anything CA (insert personal history).

We are backing up Linux, Windows and OS X servers with BE 12 pretty
reliably. BE 9 and 10 were garbage, but actually it has become better.

Wish you luck!

Re: Reliable Backup Solution

We use Retrospect and I'm pretty happy with it. Features definitely lag be=
hind the competition, but when using it for disk-based backup I haven't fou=
nd a better, more intuitive approach with software that I can afford. We u=
se it to back up Windows Servers (2003 and 2008), Exchange 2007, SQL 2005, =
and a few Linux servers (CentOS).

I've used MS DPM before with various clients and it works very well for bac=
king up Microsoft servers. There are some caveats, though. It can only ba=
ck up using an agent, and agents are only available for Windows, so this do=
esn't meet your Linux or ESX requirements.

I haven't run across a SMB backup package that can do the traditional stuff=
(Windows, Linux, Exchange, SQL, etc) and VMware Consolidated Backup, and d=
o them both well. There are enterprise options that do all of those items =
(Asigra, NetBackup, Commvault) but they're all very expensive. If I were y=
ou I'd take a mixed approach. Use a dedicated app to do host-level backups=
(vRanger, esXpress, Veeam) and then use a more traditional app to do guest=
-level backups.

I've become a big fan of Amanda - it's incredibly reliable, and if
you're comfortable with the command line, it's great. If not, you can
get Zmanda that has a nice web interface. Amanda is free and open
source, Zmanda is incredibly reasonably priced.

Re: Reliable Backup Solution

In my previous network jobs, the standard seemed to be Backup Exec and I
agree it was always problematic. When I landed here, the school used
Retrospect which is now owned by EMC.
I have found it very reliable and easy to use. We've been on it over 10
years now, and the price is fairly reasonable. A bit of a learning
curve with the interface, but once you get it down it=20
runs by itself.

Reliable Backup Solution

I'm looking for a good replacement for Backup Exec. I've been using Backup=
Exec for years but it's really been getting on my nerves lately. I can't =
get a reliable Exchange 2007 backup out of it to save my life and so I'm lo=
oking for good alternatives. I need something that can backup Windows Serv=
er 2003, 2008 and Linux servers, SQL, Exchange 2007 and VMWare ESX servers.=
I'm running a mix of x64 and x86 servers so I'll need full support for th=
at as well. Anyone out there using Acronis True Image Echo or Microsoft Sy=
stem Center Data Protection Manager or whatever it's called?

Thanks

Re: ISED-L

We limit the students to five. If you allow a larger number of allowed =
recipients the students will treat the email system as a chat system =
between large distribution groups. I have seen students with over 800 =
emails received within a 6 hour period from the large chat sessions. We =
had to decrease the number of allowed recipients or re-size the exchange =
server for that type of usage. After looking at the cost of upgrading =
the system we decided to decrease the number of allowed recipients.
=20
The faculty and staff are set to 1500 which allows them to email the =
entire school if needed.
I'm currently setting up a list server for student club distribution =

we use Memory Book Company
the book is full color, custom hard cover and 108 pages
I create it in InDesign and send it out digitally
we buy 150 books each year
support is great from Memory Book
They are less expensive than anything else I've seen.

Re: email signatures

I am not a lawyer but generally, my understanding is that email disclaimers
such as "this message is for its intended recipient only" do not have any
practical force of law. I can make any assertions whatsoever in my email
such as, "By reading this email you agree to pay me $1000 or else!" Saying
it doesn't make it legal.

That said, it (can) sound cool. And some disclaimers about policies or
opinions may actually make some sense. There is quite a bit of stuff on the
internets on disclaimers courtesy of the Great Google.

Anyone else have a different read?

*Disclaimer*
The opinions of this email are mine and mine only. They may or may not
represent the views of my employer.

We are looking for a short inspiring YouTube type movie to kickoff an
Inservice Day on all things technology. I know that there is something
good out there but I can't find it. We will break out into small groups
but want to start together. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: email signatures

Karen,

Here at Ravenscroft we have included a template for email signatures as
part of our Visual Identity Guide coming out of our Communications
Office. We believe that Ravenscroft, as a brand, should be represented
in both traditional print and electronic print exactly the same way.
Therefore, when sending emails off campus we use the signature below
which has all the requisite parts as outlined in our V.I.G.. Those parts
include name, title, school, address, phone, fax, cell, URL and school
mission (the mission being in Italics when sending in HTML or Rich
Text).

After an initial email has been sent, however, one can shorten the
signature to name and title or remove it altogether as we believe the
signature is most important when contacting someone from the outside for
the very first time and is considered as part of a proper introduction
(which is what you are making when you send emails out on behalf of your
organization).

Hope this helps!

Re: AP US History Taught Over 2 Years

As I believe (hope) I stated previously, that two-year US history
requirement in NJ is at least 37 years old. As a result, any school that
offered an AP alternative to US history most likely had to take two years to
do it - even though "a college student could've done it in one semester."
Not quite, though, since the six credits you'd get for successfully making
it through the AP exam was the equivalent of *two* semesters of college US
history.

But enough of that, let me explain how APUS worked at my old high school. It
wasn't done so much as to provide the coveted "AP" written on the
transcripts, than as a way of providing a more challenging course than the
regular one given. And you were *told* that you were taking it. You couldn't
ask to get in or out; you were placed in it based on recommendations of
previous teachers. I didn't want to be in APUS because I knew full well that
the work that would've gotten me an A in regular US would net me a C in AP.
seven Cs and one B later, I was proven correct. Fortunately, my parents
understood that an AP C was a regular A, and didn't get on my case about it
too much.

Now, since this was seen as simply a more challenging US History course, it
wasn't expected that everyone would take the exam. In fact, those who would
take the exam were selected by the teacher. After all, it was on the
school's dime, and they didn't want to put out the money for someone who was
just going to blow the whole thing. With this in mind, despite being in a
class that carried the AP name, probably no more than half of the class was
expected (or would be allowed) to take the exam. And, as such, even though
the exam was probably given some time in early May and the Jersey school
year ran through late June, our class kept going on with the regular
projects quizzes, and a final exam for the entire class.

There is, of course, a twist to this whole story. With my stellar track
record in the class, I was obviously not going to be among those allowed to
take the AP exam. But a visit from a guy from the AP Board, who explained
how the test worked, got me thinking that I might have a shot at it, and so
I badgered the teacher into letting me take it. His words were pretty much
along the lines of "In all the years I've taught this class, the lowest
score anyone has gotten on the test has been a 2. If you get a 1, I will
kill you with my bare hands." The pressure was on.

The day of the exam arrived and when I looked at the multiple choice
section, I saw trivia questions. I love trivia. Done. Next came the essay
questions, pick two out of ten. One of them I knew cold. Now I just had to
find another. By chance I had read the last chapter in the book, on the New
Deal, the night before. There was a New Deal question. Done. This was also
the first year of the DBQ. I read the documents, wrote my piece, and sat
back and relaxed while my other classmates continued to work.

A few weeks later the results came in. Most everyone else got 2s, as was
expected. The two girls fighting over valedictorian (by hundredths of a
point) choked, and amazingly got 1s. I, and I alone, got a 3. The guy who
got straight Cs and a B for two years was the only person to get college
credit for the class, and was almost prevented from taking it.

Has the world changed over the past 35 years so that people make such a big
deal over the APs, or was my little high school in North Jersey just
different from everyone else around them? Is there really such a problem
with a person taking the AP class just for a little more of a challenge, but
without even thinking about taking the exam or what the letters "AP" might
mean on their transcript?

While I understand the increasing desire to hear "other voices" in the =
34
since I was a high school kid in NJ, and had to deal with the two-year =
US
History requirement, there is something to be said for spending a lot of
time learning about "your own family" before you learn about the people =
down
the street or across town (more on that later). And as for the person =
who
wondered what on earth you needed two years to do this in when college
students could do it in one semester, my answer is very simple: You need =
two
years to do this in a leisurely high school manner with lots of high =
school
type projects, trips, and diversions. If the goal is to pack as much
American History into as little time as possible, then just give them an
iPod packed with a month's worth of stuff. It'll be crammed in one ear =
and
pushed out the other in no time. Two years seems just right to me for
planting the broad foundation needed to successfully tackle those
one-semester college courses. It also seems just the right thing for
beginning a possible lifelong love of history - US or otherwise.

Come on folks, we're talking from 1620 to the present day. That's almost =
500
years of history that you say we can condense down to one semester. I =
doubt
it. I suspect that those one-semester college wonders are looking at a
specific issue or a specific era. Not the entire 500 year ball of wax.

Now, let me talk about "the family." I've come to conclude that where =
the
history of your country is concerned, or at least where American history =
is
concerned, it's like genealogy. It's all about *us*. It's all about how =
we
got to be us. It's all about how the different threads got woven =
together,
sometimes artfully and sometimes not, to create the tapestry that is =
this
country. In the end it's about how people in the past got together, for
better or worse, to create the people we are now. And that might just =
take
two years.

Yeah, other voices are nice too. I represent one of those other voices; =
but
I don't think that the desire to acknowledge the "other voices" should =
mean
that less time is spent on the whole choir. Indeed, I believe that if =
we're
really looking at this genealogically, we have to talk about each of =
those
other voices as they enter the picture, and see how they influenced the
mainstream, and how mainstream decisions toward those voices led to =
certain
events and situations later on that everyone would regret. But don't =
draw
them out as separate items. Not in high school. That's not the place for
such specialization as "African-Americans in US History," "Irish in US
History," "Native Americans in US History," or "Germans in US History." =
And
yet, how much though has anyone really given to the Germans in US =
history.
I'm betting that most of you are thinking, "Germans, Scots, Brits, just
another subset of the dominant white people." But perhaps a closer look =
will
show that it ain't necessarily so.

My wife, who is of German ancestry said that when she wanted to find out
more about Germans in US history, she had to go to the library herself.
There was no German History Month, there was no bulletin board devoted =
to
famous Germans, there was no "Other Voices" class devoted to the =
Germans.
And certainly, no one talked about the anti-German propaganda during =
both
world wars, or the fact that Germans had been sent to "relocation camps"
just like the Japanese. I'm sure that my Italian brother-in-law will say =
the
same thing about having to find out about famous Italians as a group on =
his
own time.

I say let the "other voices" be part of a two-year course on US history =
that
looks at the entire choir.

It's not an incredibly active list but it does seem to be one of the

Independent international school seeking HS Science and Early Childhood educators

I am the school principal at the Khartoum American School. I am just
finishing up at the University of Northern Iowa Overseas Teachers
Recruiting Fair where I have had the good fortune of meeting with some
excellent educators. One of our candidates, and new teachers,
introduced me to this list and I am hoping to use it to find more
educators who share her dynamism and commitment to independent
education. Our school does not look at the 'hiring process' as one of
finding teachers to fill positions, but rather one of building a team,
so do not hesitate to contact us if you feel an affinity for our
educational mission. In the meantime, please make sure to get in touch
if you are a HS Science or Kindergarten teacher who finds the following
appealing:

The Khartoum American School is an independent international school with
a 52 year history in Sudan. We are a small, dynamic school of 230
students (PK-12) representing almost 40 nationalities. Our staff is
dedicated to the school's mission of achieving academic excellence
through a student-centered program and inquiry-based curriculum, and our
teachers work creatively and collaboratively to do so. KAS is a member
of the National Association of Independent Schools and is accredited by
both the Middle States Association and the Council of International
Schools. Though linked to AERO standards, our curriculum is designed,
evaluated and revised continually by our teachers. Teachers seeking a
student-centered and inquiry-based program and who are uncomfortable
with 'coverage' and textbook-based curricula will find a good
philosophical fit at KAS.

HS Physical Sciences teacher
We are currently seeking a 'hands on/minds on' high school science
teacher able to teach core physical sciences (Physical Science 9,
Chemistry 11 and Physics 12), Advanced Placement Chemistry and to offer
creative elective options. Our semester-long electives are based on
student and teacher interests, and student needs; recent offerings
include Search for Extra-Terrestrial Life, Primitive Technology,
Astronomy, Oceanography, Theories of Everything, Skeptical Inquiry,
Current Issues in Science, Greening the Planet and more. Our core
science program teaches "science as process" as opposed to "science as a
series of facts" and uses student-led investigations in the laboratory,
the classroom and broader community to familiarize students with
scientific content through the scientific method. Students critically
examine the nature of scientific knowledge, and how this knowledge is
best created and evaluated.

Kindergarten teacher
We are also looking for a Kindergarten teacher who is experienced with
the emergent curriculum model, believes in learning through play and is
able to create a nurturing and stimulating learning environment. This
teacher would join our dynamic early childhood team working with PK3,
PK4 and K classes. The teacher will also work closely with the
elementary team to ensure a smooth transition for students as they enter
grade 1, and to ensure continuity in the program.

If you would like to start an informal discussion about the positions,
school or life in Khartoum please contact me at bwaugh@krtams.org. If
not, you can apply for either position by e-mailing the school's
director, Phil Clinton, at pclinton@krtams.org with a cover letter,
statement of educational philosophy and current CV (with references).
