Re: Cell phone base antenna on campus

This is the de facto standard answer for Cell Phones and there is something=
similar for towers but I just can't put my finger on it.=0A=A0=0Ahttp://ww=
w.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/pr/2010/pdfs/pr200_E.pdf=0A=0AThe big exception w=
ith the tower is=A0there are known exposure risks within a certain range (m=
easured in=A0feet) so you do have to build in some protections which the ph=
one companies are well aware of and can provide info on.=A0 I came to a sch=
ool=A010 years ago=A0immediately following=A0the refusal of a similar propo=
sal by telcos.=A0=A0=0A=A0=0AApparently it was a=A0somewhat long and conten=
tious process that came down to a board decision=A0that was against the tow=
er.=A0 In the end it came=A0down to the inability of the phone companies to=
prove a negative, as in "Prove this=A0tower won't=A0harm my child".=A0 The=
best those companies can do is say, "The best science we have says there i=
s no correlation to increased health problems due to cell towers unless you=
are regularly within=A0X feet."=A0 =0A=A0=0AThere are lots of schools with=
cell towers, but=A0they are mostly public=A0school systems, so it is=A0a d=
oubly difficult proposition for an independent school.=A0=A0I think the har=
d part for my school was that the tower was to be placed directly above the=
classrooms of very young children.=A0 Well=A0within safety limits, shielde=
d and not accessible, but high visual proximity.=A0=A0There=A0was also defi=
nitely a correlation between children's age and parents concern over RF.=A0=
We received far more questions=A0about=A0Wi-Fi in the classroom from 3rd=
=A0grade and below than we did for 4th and above.=A0 =0A=A0=0AThose are som=
e of the pitfalls.=A0 I wish I had suggestions on what worked, but it is hi=
ghly dependent on your community and what they see as the benefit vs the ri=
sk, but don't expect a reasoned scientific argument to help since the scien=
ce is always caveatted (as it should be) and parents want absolutes assuran=
ces.=A0 =0A=A0=0A_J=0A=A0=0A=0A=A0____________________________=0AJason at j=

lo,=0A=0AWe're considering a proposal from Sprint and ATT to install a base=
antenna=0Aon our School campus.=A0 Both providers are offering substantial=

=0Awould get significantly better mobile phone coverage within our building=

m wondering if any of you have had a similar proposal and if so, what=0Awas=
your decision-making process?=0ADid you conduct an independent study or ob=
tain studies regarding potential=0Ahealth risks?=0AThe potential health ris=
ks are the most significant factor for us at this=0Apoint and I thought I w=
ould just check with my ISED colleagues to see if=0Aperhaps you have alread=
