Cross-Platform, Screen Observation and Control Software

I am looking for software that can be used by a teacher to observe all of
the laptops in her classroom in a thumbnail view. ARD does this on the Mac,
but in our case we need a teacher's system (normally a Mac), to be able to
see the screen of any Mac, Windows, or Linux computer in her classroom.

At this point, observe only is okay. But if the software could also lock
screens, keyboards, and so on that would be a nice plus.

Open source is preferred.

There seems to be dozens of possibilities out there, as detailed in this
site on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_remote_desktop_software

Cost of full-blown systems seem to be very high for something that may not
be needed as teachers become comfortable with students using laptops in
their classrooms, and students learn better habbitudes about appropriate
use. Nevertheless, I want to be able to present teachers who want such a
system with the option.

VNC is a good standard, but it seems like implementations of it vary so
widely by platform.

Thoughts?
