Re: a question

You could also set this up on a very simple Drupal site using the webform module: http://drupal.org/project/webform

Students could be allowed to submit forms anonymously, or they could choose to include their name (if they wished).

Additionally, all submissions can be exported in CSV format, which would allow you to analyze the data in a variety of ways.

Cheers,

Bill

Re: Math Curriculum Adoption

At Viewpoint we have begun the process of moving the K-6 Math Curriculum
towards Singapore Math. We are using an American edition of the book, we
have had a 3-day workshop with Dr. Robert Bisk, and we are getting some
additional in-service training from the Pi Project in Palo Alto. We have begun
in K-1, plan to add perhaps 2-3 next year. Lots of teachers are learning
and using the modeling techniques of the program. We have not tossed out
other materials but will continue to enrich with them.

Re: Math Curriculum Adoption

Hi Shelly--

We use Investigations (2nd edition) for K-5 and Connected Math for 6-8. We
have well-established benchmarks for basic number combinations at each grade
level K-5, based on the program's curriculum. We also use Boston's
assessments for end-of-unit and end-of-year benchmarking. Additionally, we
have implemented instructional standards or non-negotiables (60 minutes of
math a day, plus 10 minute math), monthly "looking at student work" sessions
at grade level, and ongoing professional development. We also use Math
Forum for weekly problems K-8, Math Olympiads for the monthly Math Club, and
other problems for differentiation around readiness and interest--these are
open to everyone and optional for teacher and parent use.

In the 10 years we have used these curricula we have found that the
instructional component, along with strong professional development through
math coaching and collaborative coaching is what makes the greatest
difference for our students.

Re: a question

Check out Response-o-matic.com.
Allows you to create your own surveys, for each class-- lots of features
from which to select. (They are basically the same web components you'd
find in site design applications, but all you have to do here is add up the
features you like, questions, --long answers, short answers, multiple
choice--and upload it to your class webpage--and have the results sent to
your email. You could designate a mailbox for responses.

Re: a question about posting your students' grades on line

Ellen,

I am not familiar with "Proof". Could you provide some more information
or a web link?

Online Grades has an established export format for the grade book
software programs to use. In theory any grade book software would work,
if they supported that export format. Online Grades does have some
support for comments (via 2 methods). You could look at building the
export from Filemaker to Online Grades.

Re: a question about posting your students' grades on line

Hi Sam,
That sounds very interesting. I looked at the site and at the moment we
don't use any of those particular programs for grading. I'm hoping to
change the horrible one we now have but we have to find something cost
effective since the school ploughed considerable amounts of money into the
one we now have and dislike (it also helps with the schedule).

We're looking at a program that works with filemaker pro, which we've used
in the past, but haven't settled on anything. What we really need is
something that will enable us to include decent comments with the grades.
Do you know if any of these particular programs have that sort of
sophistication and flexibility?

Alternatively, would something like "Proof" be compatible with online
grades?

Thanks,

Ellen

CALL FOR PRESENTERS: NCAIS Innovate 2010

Dear Colleagues,
The North Carolina Association of Independent Schools Commission on
Technology is pleased to announce:
NCAIS INNOVATE 2010: Thursday, March 11th and Friday, March 12th 2010 at
Cary Academy (Cary, NC)
Featuring
A Live Broadcast by EdTechTalk's 21st Century Learning
<http://edtechtalk.com/taxonomy/term/9> Team
Hosts: Arvind Grover <http://www.21apples.org/> (on-site), Alex Ragone
<http://www.learning-blog.org/> (NY), and Vinnie Vronty
<http://vvrotny.org/> (IL)
IGNITE Education Presentations
Based on the popular IGNITE <http://ignite.oreilly.com/> series we are
experimenting with this format during Thursday's dinner.
Conference Website
Call for Presenters:
http://innovate.ncais.org/ncais-innovate/call-for-presenters/
Conference Schedule:
http://innovate.ncais.org/ncais-innovate/ncais-innovate-2010/
For More Information: http://innovate.ncais.org/ncais-innovate/
Background
NCAIS INNOVATE is taking a huge leap forward in 2010 as we celebrate our
5th anniversary of providing a time for independent school educators to
gather, discuss, learn, and share their experiences teaching and
learning in a digital age.
First and foremost the conference has undergone a name change. The NCAIS
TECH moniker of years past is now replaced with NCAIS INNOVATE. We
believe the new name better reflects that which we are all attempting to
achieve in our schools - innovation in education.
Second, and just as important, is a new conference format. For the first
time we are experimenting with the addition of a half-days worth of
pre-conference dialogue, conversations and longer hands-on sessions
capped by a wonderful conference dinner with experimental IGNITE
Education presentations. We expect this new half-day to add to the
already wonderful full-day experience of prior years.
Lastly, we have moved away from the NCAISTECH wiki page and developed a
community blog initiative called "Igniting Innovation; Sparking
Conversation about Learning in the Digital Age" which will feature
posts, or preferably conversation starters, by members of NCAIS' C.O.T.
We hope that this will be a place for interested educators to join in
the robust conversation surrounding today's teaching and learning in the
digital age.
Whether you are interested in attending or sharing your passion as a
presenter we hope that you will consider joining us March 11th and 12th,
2010 at Cary Academy as we roll out NCAIS INNOVATE 2010.

I have helped several schools set up the free Online Grades software -->
http:\\www.onlinegrades.org . It is free and the key to being able to
use it is to set up compatible web hosting and have a compatible grade
book software to produce the exports for the Online Grades software.

Re: Digital essay marking/annotating tools

I've excerpted some ideas from Chapter 7 of Best Ideas for Teaching
with Technology: A Practical Guide for Teachers, by Teachers:

1.The easiest way to comment in a student=92s paper is by inserting bold
text. Your comments will stand out from the rest of the paper, and you
can switch to boldface just by pressing Control-B. If you want to be
certain that students can tell their text from your comments, you can
also put your boldface comments in parentheses, (like this).

2. Another simple tool for marking up papers online, common to most
word processors, is the highlighter, which colors the background of
text much like a real highlighter. The highlighter works well for
marking grammar and style errors in essay drafts. If the error is
simple enough for students to figure out the problem, the highlighter
gives them a chance to solve it. If the error requires some
explanation, go back to using the bold text.

3. Another option for making distinctive comments is the Font Color
button, which in Word looks like a capitalized =93A=94 with a bar of color
below it. You could use different colored text for different types of
comments, though all the clicking and selecting is time consuming. We
tend to not use this tool in favor of the boldface, mostly because it
is so much easier and fast to just hit Control-B (Command-B on a Mac)
then doing all the clicking, and boldface stands out as well as red or
blue font.
=09
4. Microsoft Word: AutoCorrect -- Go to the AutoCorrect Options in
Word and look for the windows that say Replace and With. Put the
offending spelling in the Replace box and the correct spelling in the
With box, and click OK. From then on, Word will make the change for
you.
While AutoCorrect was designed to fix spelling errors, there is no
reason you can=92t use it to make typing easier. For instance, you can
tell Word to change =93pgh=94 into =93paragraph,=94 and =93pghs=92 into
=93paragraphs=94 as the first step towards letting you use something like
a secretarial shorthand when typing. To take this a step further, you
can also program your ten or twenty most common comments into the
AutoCorrect. (Don=92t you wish you had a dollar for every time you typed
=93this sentence is too vague,=94 or =93you need more details here!=94)
Example; ts1 =3D "Your topic sentences set a clear and purposeful
direction for each paragraph."

Assignment-specific comments could be deleted after the assignment.
Say you have assigned a documents-based essay to fifty students and
you have a good sense of which documents will give students difficulty
and why. In advance of correcting the essays you might then set up
some Auto-correct comments that explain to the students why they might
have misinterpreted this or that document. You could even correct the
essay with pen and paper and just create a Word page for Auto-correct
comments.

Re: a question about posting your students' grades on line

We use Blackbaud NetClassroom. Teachers post grades using Blackbaud
FacultyAccess gradebook. While teachers have to post final grades and
comments using the FA gradebook, we don't require that they use the FA
gradebook to manage their day-to-day
grades.

FacultyAccess allows for online review of grades either centrally
(e.g. by department chairs, dean, etc.) or peer-to-peer. At Peddie
dept chairs are responsible for reviewing grades and we leave it up to
individual dept chairs to decide whether they want to use the online
Faculty Access tools to review grade reports or go old school and
require teachers to give them hard copies of their reports.

If you would like to see screen shots, we created a KB that is not
password protected which explains the process and has a number of
screen shots.

We ran into the same problem at Cary Academy. We discovered that problem wa=
s in one of our active directory group policies applied at the root of the =
domain level.

Policy was set to configure secure certificates in a certain way. We moved =
the group policy to one of the subordinated OUs with XP machines, created n=

Our default domain policy doesn't have any settings other that few account =

win7 and joining domain

I have just gotten 3 machines with windows 7 Pro operating systems. The
only problem I've had so far is that although I can add the machine to the
domain, the domain user can't login to the domain. Any ideas on how to set
this up? All of our other machines are XP Professional.

Thanks,

Terri

Hello, Tom,

I was wondering what system you use for your online grades.

Thanks!

We just report cumulative grades at midterm and end of term.

9 - 12

The current system merely replaced paper grades mailed home. The
online system allows us to get grades and comments to parents more
quickly. We are able to publish grades to parents within an hour or
two after they are reviewed, but our procedure is to allow
faculty/advisors to review grades for 12 to 24 hours before publishing
to parents. Today is actually our grade due date. Grades were due at 9
AM, were published to faculty by noon, and will be published to
parents tomorrow morning.

Again, the electronic system merely replaces the paper system. The
biggest advantage from the student-parent perspective is that the
grades and comments aren't stale.

We did briefly discuss the pros and cons of opening up grade books for
a limited time during the term when we moved to the online system. The
main advantage to this approach is that it is a way to provide
important information to parents without increasing the load on an
already very busy faculty. The downsides included things such as
concerns about how this information could do more harm than good and
the need to standardize on a single grade book solution for all
faculty to make it practical.

Re: Digital essay marking/annotating tools

We're using tablets to do electronic markup of text...gives you all the =
colors of pens and highlighters you might need. When I get a document =
from a student (in Word) I set the spacing to double if it's not that =
and go to town marking it up just as I would with a pen. What I really =
like is that I can mark it up and then remove or change markup as I go =
along, in case I don't want the paper to hemorrhage with red pen or in =
case I understand later a question I had earlier. I also LOVE that then =
I have a copy of the marked up version as well as returning one to the =
student, so when end of term grading rolls around I can easily refer to =
the paper to write about the student's proficiencies and deficiencies. =20

Re: Wear, tear, loss and theft for loaned equipment

We have the user sign a laptop agreement. I copy the first few paragraph
of the agreement below. I do extend the warranty for the expected life
of the computer (3-4 years) and add Computrace. I also do preventive
maintenance three times a year on each computer.=20

Agreement for Laptop Use
The Post Oak School is pleased to issue the following laptop for
your sole use on and off the school campus. On campus, the school
will provide a safe environment for your laptop use. Off campus, you
promise to follow all reasonable measures to protect this laptop, to
comply with The Post Oak School's Acceptable Use Policy and netiquette
guidelines, and to use this laptop and the Internet in a constructive
manner.

You are responsible for backing up any data saved on the
laptop's hard drive. We recommend that you save all files to the
school's network instead of the laptop's hard drive; alternately,
you may check out a flash drive from the director of information
technology.

If this laptop is lost or stolen, you will be responsible for
paying $250.00. If it is damaged, you will be responsible for up to
$250 for necessary repairs, except in the case of mechanical
failures not due to negligence. Such payments are due within 45
school days of the RETURN date noted below or within 45 school days
of the day that The Post Oak School learns that the equipment has
been damaged, lost, or stolen. New equipment will be issued when
payment is received.
=09
Laptops must be returned to the director of information
technology at the end of your contract, on your last day of
employment, or when you change your job position at the school,
whichever comes first.

I think this might have been covered in this forum before. Unless the
loss is truly through gross negligence, the cost is covered through the
IT department. We usually have 2-3 laptops and 3-4 cameras a year "die"
while out on loan. This has included soda spilled in it, a bike accident
(where the laptop was in the backpack and got crushed), and items being
dropped. In all instances, the school has covered the cost for
replacement. =20

Hi,

Wondering how various schools handle wear/tear and loss/theft issues for
loaned equipment, both to employees and students when possible. If a
laptop
drops and is broken, does your IT department eat the cost? Any
experiences,
good or bad, with charging a theft (or some portion of it) out of a
salary
or adding it to tuition bills?

Also would love to hear if anybody's taken a more pro-active approach,
either in bonuses or recognition for well-taken-care-of hardware or not
having to file a helpdesk ticket to fix things (rewarding preventative
medicine like anti-virus, so to speak).

Thanks, and happy almost Thanksgiving!

the margins on a student's paper and putting my comments, opposite the
requisite wording, in a text box on the right hand margin.

Just a little bit removed from the old red/green pen/pencil comments , I'm
afraid.
