I have gone through three major renovations in the past 10 years and =
will go through another one in a year. The last three, we designed the =
lab with the following in mind: enough space to easily walk around and =
help students, electricity needs (especially putting outlets in the =
middle of the room, so we are not running cables across the floor), =
group work - making sure there is enough room for two large 8th grade =
students at every computer, and aesthetics.
However, with laptops becoming wireless, this renovation we need to make =
sure the network, especially wireless is adequate. We are dismantling =
our full lab and moving to a media center. The difference is, the =
regular day-to-day use of technology (word processing, researching, =
spreadsheets, 2d drawing, etc.) is done using the laptops in the =
classrooms. (We have one cart for every two classrooms.) High-end =
projects (video, 3d art, animation, etc.) will happen in the media =
center where we will have about 10 high-end desktops and peripherals =
(digital cameras, video cameras, scanners, etc.).

We are in the process of building a new k-8 building & there has been
discussion of eliminating most, if not all, physical computer lab space, =
in
favor of rolling carts (wireless, obviously). Any thoughts on this? Has
anyone done this? How did it go?
Please feel free to respond off-list.
Thanks!

Subject: renovation feedback
Hello,
I'm seeking information, anecdotes, feedback, etc from those of you who
have been a part of a major renovation within the last ten years. More
specifically those of you who exist/work in library and technology (i.e.
computer labs) spaces, what were your guiding principles in space design
or providing input towards design, what concerns did you have, what
obstacles or problems did you encounter, what do you wish you could have
done differently now after the renovations are finished...

Feel free to reply to my email address (nbancks@spa.edu) rather replying
to the entire listserv.

Thanks so much for any feedback!
