Re: renovation feedback

We have a VERY small lab. The tables are built in. With traditional
monitors, there wasn't enough student work space. We now have all in one
machines, which improved the situation. We are transitioning to imacs
next year, which will further alleviate the space crunch/cord battle.

I second Sr. Elizabeth's comment about carpet and rolling chairs. The
chairs in my lab (just inexpensive Staples chairs) are 8 years old. Just
now am I considering replacing them, as some of the pneumatic lift
handles have started to crack. It is nice for students to be able to
swivel to see the board. My pet peeve, and number one rule is "No
playing merry-go-round with your chair!" I get dizzy watching them
sometimes! :-)

Here is an article about our "small space" with a picture of our lab:

The only change we have made, since the article was published, is I now
have an all in one wall mounted SMART board instead of a moveable one on
casters. That has helped open up a little space for the student station
closest to the board.

Subject: renovation feedback

Hello,

I'm seeking information, anecdotes, feedback, etc from those of you who
have been a part of a major renovation within the last ten years. More
specifically those of you who exist/work in library and technology (i.e.
computer labs) spaces, what were your guiding principles in space design
or providing input towards design, what concerns did you have, what
obstacles or problems did you encounter, what do you wish you could have
done differently now after the renovations are finished...

Feel free to reply to my email address (nbancks@spa.edu) rather replying
to the entire listserv.

Thanks so much for any feedback!
