needs to have a fairly short throw. I searched the archives and found
this from 1999. Given how rapidly technology changes, does anyone have a
more current model that they would recommend. The projector needs to be
fairly bright, as we can't darken our gym 100%.

Dear Friends,
After reading your messages, especially Tom's enthusiasm for the
zoom
feature, I asked our vendor to come back out for another "shoot-out"
with
various models including the NEC 830+.
I fell in love with the NEC 830+. With 1200 ANSI lumens it was so
bright one could use it on the playground; and once I saw the zoom
feature I
knew it was a must-have for our teacher. However, due to some budget
constraints that meant I'd have to buy fewer projectors and I couldn't
picture anyone volunteering to go without.
Our vender showed us a CTX-610. It had the zoom and freeze features,
good resolution, an educational price of $3,100 but only 600 ANSI
lumens.
Since our faculty have been satisfied with their Sony's (500 ANSI
lumens),
we decided to go with the CTX-610 and then, when the budget allows,
purchase
one or two of the NEC 830+ for areas that need the brightness.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone on this listserve
(especially Tom who always has such good advice). It's so comforting to
have such generous colleagues sharing their expertise.
