We are a PK-8 school.
In 2006-2007 we would be implementing a middle school (grades 5-8). =20
Since we found that technology was integral in learning, the schedule =20=
would be designed that I would have each group of middle schoolers =20
twice a week for 40 minutes. After visiting several schools with =20
technology integration, my principal felt that we were moving =20
backwards by having these students have a technology class. We =20
revamped to have PK-4, 40 minutes each week and no classes in 5-8, =20
including that on Wednesday, I would have planned research- I do not =20
see the teachers about integration unless it is a technical problem. =20
After being posed the question why did we make this change, we came =20
up with this answer:
=95 Computer classes were originally designed to teach students about =20=
how to use the computer.
=95 Students enter in Kindergarten with an increased technical ability =20=
level.
=95 Rather than learning what a computer is, we are leveraging the =20
computer as a learning tool.
=95 Rather than creating technology outcomes, our technology enhances =20=
our core curricula outcomes.
After we removed technology classes from Middle School, we required =20
each teacher to integrate 2 times a month, this included all of our =20
specialists. We started with 2 because at that time we had 1 computer =20=
lab and 1 mobile lab for 250+ students. In addition, I sat in the =20
classes and helped teach the new skills to both the teachers, in =20
early morning professional development, and to the students. We had =20
every teacher each time fill out a technology integration form online =20=
(using Zoho Creator) so that the other teachers could get ideas as =20
well. We also fostered sharing during staff meetings and grade level =20=
meetings.
This year (07-08), we added 60 more laptops to our school and =20
increased our integration expectation.
PK-2 teachers are recommended to integrate at least 3 times a month, =20
most go well over this number.
3-4 teachers integrate at least 4 times a months, again most go over =20
this number.
5-8 teachers integrate at least 6 times over two lessons, most go =20
over this number as well.
How we define integration to our teachers: "Integration does not mean =20=
your project will be newsworthy, integration means you will give =20
students a skill for the 21st century."
Hope this helps!
