Intro - new member

Hello,

My name is Christina DiMicelli. I am the Technology Integration =
Specialist for a small private school in southern New Hampshire that =
serves K-8. Next year I will be adding to my responsibilities as I =
begin teaching the upper school (grades 6, 7, 8) computer classes.

Interesting. I just renewed my membership, and I was really excited to
sign up for the independent school SIG.

Perhaps we should try to do something that will include ISED and the SIG

If I remember correctly, last year, at the San Antonio NECC conference, Howard Levin was one of the energy centers to coordinate independent school activities at NECC specifically and ISTE in general. He was an ISTE board member at that time and represented independent school interests.

Is there anybody at the board level now who represents our interests?

Count me in to at least be in attendance for any gathering in DC.

Policies around assigning homework and administering assessments on religious holidays

Dear Colleagues,

Currently, my school-a grade four through nine boys day school-- makes
school wide accommodations to account for the large portions of boys in
our community who observe the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur, Rosh
Hashanah and Passover and the holidays of Good Friday and Easter
observed by some Christian religions. As we are in session for all of
these holidays when they fall on a weekday, our accommodations include
assigning no homework on the evenings when these celebrations occur and
prohibiting the administration of significant assessments (tests,
presentations, papers, etc.) the day of (Good Friday) or the day
immediately following these holidays. For students whose religious
practices include observing holidays not on this list, we will make
accommodations that include extensions of deadlines or excusing boys
from the assignment if we are informed by the boy or his
parents/guardians that he celebrates a particular religious holiday.

questions, I would appreciate your assistance.

To decide what to buy, I think you need a conversation and process which in=
ludes technology staff, academic technologists, and end-users. Factors of p=
rice, speed, battery life, warranty support will usually lead you to a deci=

I recently went on the search for "the best" tablet notebook and after
reading many online reviews and speaking with all of our hardware
vendors, the Lenovo seemed to be the tablet of choice (as mentioned by
Robert below). =20

I have been at schools were the IT dept. or the school administrators
made technology purchase decisions without consulting the teachers who
would be using the technology and think that is a little ridiculous.
Ultimately the IT dept. should make the final decision based on price,
purpose and quality, but the teachers should have input on what they

I've been using Symantec at various jobs for the past 10 years, and have
been disappointed with the increased overhead as time has gone on.
Especially in a K-12 environment where we keep machines longer, that
overhead creates more of a problem.

Our Symantec license is up in August, and this time around it will not be
renewed...thankfully.

I looked closely at Kaspersky, Sophos, Trend, and Sunbelt Vipre Enterprise.

We went with Vipre, which covers anti-virus and anti-spyware. I really liked
the engine and how it wasn't the resource hog that Symantec and some of the
others. I also liked the management console.

We're in the midst of deploying it now, so I'm not at a point where I can
talk about it in action quite yet.

They came through with some great pricing for us, and included "home use"
licenses which is a big plus given the cost of the home anti-virus options
these days.

Thanks once again for a year full of interesting threads and
thoughtful contribution. It's amazing that even with all the Nings,
blogs, tweets, wikis, and other communication tools out there, that
ISED-L continues to thrive.

If you are planning to be away from the list over the summer, please
consider suspending delivery. Full mailboxes, full conferences, user
accounts that no longer exist on your servers, and unmoderated away
messages from subscribers' accounts can create a nuisance for list
moderators and readers. Directions for suspending follow (not that
the NOMAIL command is *not* sent to the normal address you use to post
to the list).

Suspending mail from ISED-L is similar to subscribing. Use this
command when you expect to be away from your mail account for a period
of time and do not want your mailbox to fill.
Send a message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu with body

To resume the delivery of ISED-L postings, do the same thing, except
the body of the message should be

If you need to leave the listserv permanently, kindly sign off. If
