Re: Query - parent Education on Social Networking (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace)

In conjunction with our Dean of Students, I've met with groups of
parents to talk about social networking. I do a presentation (which
I've done at a number of other schools) that begins with talking about
the tools and what they are (since there are still a number of parents
who have never seen any of these tools), and then I talk about why they
are of value to the kids (and to us as well). We also tell parents what
we are doing on campus (assemblies, policies, documentation) to address
the use of social networking with students and faculty. Finally we ask
the parents to partner with us in learning (themselves) about the tools
so they can build a vocabulary with which to open discussions about
(safe and appropriate) use with their kids. The most compelling links I
have found are videos about why students use them and about
cyberbullying, and research on how to speak to students effectively
about internet safety. The first one is my favorite. - Vi

Take a look at http://www.edsocialmedia.com. We had them to our school =20

The bootcamp focused on using the social media tools in schools. From =20
Twiiter to Facebook to podcast to blogs. They were extremely helpful =20
and I can't recommend what they do, the resources they online and the =20

Re: Digital cameras

I found that digital cameras that we truly let students use down to =
kindergarten, have a lifespan of about 12-18 months. I have purchased =
cameras from $50 up to $500 and they all seem to have the same lifespan =
when I give up control and let kids use them.

I buy 10 low-end (about $75) cameras at the beginning of each school =
year. (This is the third year I have done this.) A resolution of 4-5 =
megs is all that is needed for grades K-8. They can be signed out by =
students and teachers. Each camera has a 2 gig memory card and a card =
reader. I also keep a supply of about 20 AA batteries charged for them =
to grab. Students and teachers can take the cameras home for up to a =
week if they need them for a project. They can also take them on field =
trips.

Once I was able to let kids use the cameras when and where they needed =
them, I find they are used all the time. Projects have become so much =
more "their own." All the cameras I bought this year also have a movie =
feature. Kids as young as 2nd grade have figured out on their own how =
to use it, and were able to download and add these videos to their =
projects. =20

It is April, and I still have seven of the original ten working. (Two of =
the cameras I will send in for warranty repair. The other one was =
dropped, so the warranty is voided.) The only thing I will change next =
year, is I will buy 4 gig memory cards as the movies take up a lot of =
space on the cards.

So, my recommendations: 1. Buy cameras under $100. 2. Buy large =
memory cards. 3. Buy lots of rechargeable batteries and keep them on =
hand. 4. Truly let the kids use the camera; they will amaze you at =
what they can do with it. =20

Recorded Webinar on Social Media

Recently, Tim Breslin of Partners in Mission, Rob DiMartino of finalsite and I gave a webinar on Effective Social Media Techniques for Independent Schools. This webinar was attended by over 50 educators but many more were unable to make this event.
Therefore an archive of that webinar is now available at: http://www.finalsite.com/social. Listen in and you'll get tips on best practices with social media, why traditional marketing isn't enough anymore, what pitfalls to avoid and much more.

I'm going to hold on to Steve's coattails a little bit here - I keep
waiting
for some time to read through this thread thoroughly and respond
accordingly, bu that time doesn't seem to be presenting itself. (This
weekend!)

I will say this: we're looking at a fairly diminished population next
year,
and, as the current administration seems fond of saying, never waste a
good
crisis. I believe it's a wonderful opportunity for us to really push
forward
on a curriculum which will be a hybrid between some core in-class
courses
and online opportunities.

Given that we're entering the Wild West era of K-12 education, it's of
course necessary to have some sort of quality control, but also a sense
of
what is appropriate for the kid in front of me - the kid with the math
disability, or who is not particularly motivated, or with an EF
difficulty.
In that sense, the important connection will be between schools with
similar
populations.

Re: Anyone with experience with Mimio Interactive System (Smart Board alternative)?

We had a couple of Mimios but found them insufficient for our needs.
The point tracking was not sophisticated enough for math graphing, which
was what we were trying at the time. We also had a bunch installed on
sliding whiteboards and the people would slide the boards and the Mimeos
would go sailing across the room...sigh. To their credit, they took
quite a few hits before breaking.

Hello,

I curious to know the experiences people have with the Mimio Interactive
system (http://www.mimio.com).

What makes Mimio interesting is that we can use our existing whiteboard
without relying on a whiteboard system. I think the cost is around
$1,000
which makes this more affordable than other systems.

We did exactly this set up. Because of our location, we can't even get
cable, so we have Dish Satellite. We have the signal split and running
into 20 RF modulators, each set to a different analog channel (2-21, I
think). Then we distribute that signal to our dorm common rooms. It works
OK. The signal definitely degrades over the length of our building, but
its better than before.

Before, we ran the satellite signal to the common rooms and our boys
destroyed the satellite receiver boxes, plus we had WAY too much content.

I would be interested in some sort of IP solution (something that would
allow me to watch a TV channel on my computer, specifically) for special
events like the Inauguration, but we haven't found anything yet (we're a
Mac school). Yes, we know about QTSS, and we use it for on-demand video
files, but not for live streaming stuff (yet!).

I'd be happy to put you in touch with someone here who knows our analog
system if you would like more info.

Re: Head-End / Closed Circuit Video Distribution

Last summer I ended up with an IP video distribution system from Videofurna=

d Vbrick Ethernetv when but decided on Videofurnace for various reasons. I=
'm in Illinois too so the good thing about Videofurnace was that they're in=

The biggest thing you need to keep in mind with any of these IP based syste=

Subject: Head-End / Closed Circuit Video Distribution

Anyone have any experience with deploying a head-end video distribution
unit on their campus? As a boarding school , we have Comcast cable run
directly to campus faculty residences and dorm commons, and we have no
control over the content provided. We would like a central feed from
which we can choose from cable, satellite, or digital broadcast, and
distribute them across campus with digital signage and select security
cameras on the unused channels, without the need for a set-top box at
ever T.V. (similar to what a hotel or condominium complex offers). =20

Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer,

Are you deploying Linux desktops at your school?

Does anyone have first-hand experience with the Mimio Studio software? I'm
also looking at acquiring a couple of these and would love to hear more
testimonials.

TIA,

Re: Query - parent Education on Social Networking (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace)

Take a look at http://www.edsocialmedia.com. We had them to our school
(The Montclair Kimberley Academy) for a social media bootcamp in
February and the day was extremely successful. There were a number of
other school in attendance as well (30-40 people).

The bootcamp focused on using the social media tools in schools. From
Twiiter to Facebook to podcast to blogs. They were extremely helpful
and I can't recommend what they do, the resources they online and the
level of help.

Trying to Budget

We're looking at running a pilot program next year wherein we would have 25
- 30 kids taking online classes for credit, while working with a
teacher-coach here at school.
I am trying to budget this program.
Ha!

We currently have a single server, about 5 year sold, running Windows Server
2003; one wireless access point, and a 768 kps asdl line. Ain't gonna cut it
for 25-30 kids all logging on at once every day and accessing multimedia
content over the web.

We have in mind student supplied laptops/netbooks; school supplied OneNote.
So the costs - to me - seem tied up in:

- bandwidth to the server from the ISP
- internal wireless access and bandwidth
- server and server redundancy
- OneNote site license
- teacher trianing!

What am I missing?

Anyone here work with a reliable contractor in the Washington DC/ Silver
Spring MD area that you would recommend for us to speak with? Ideally,
they'd come out and take a look at our situation and give us a ballpark
price for what it would take to design, install and maintain the system we
would need to have this run - successfully.
In the next couple of weeks

Alternatively: anyone with enough recent experience to give me a laundry
list of costs good enough for an initial budget?

Many thanks!

Re: Anyone with experience with Mimio Interactive System (Smart Board alternative)?

I'm a fan. I had them for all classrooms at my last school. I'm waiting
for the Linux driver so I can bring them in here at Whitfield. I like the
Classroom management software and like that I can get value out of it
without a project, when I don't have/need one.

Even had kids use the RF and Audio to do performance art once. It was a
little strange but still creativity you can't do with a SMART Board! :-)

Take care,

Anyone with experience with Mimio Interactive System (Smart Board alternative)?

Hello,

I curious to know the experiences people have with the Mimio Interactive
system (http://www.mimio.com).

What makes Mimio interesting is that we can use our existing whiteboard
without relying on a whiteboard system. I think the cost is around $1,000
which makes this more affordable than other systems.

thanks for 7 years of gathering helpful information from all the =
incredibly gifted and sharing members of ISED. My first 4 years of in =
education were at a wonderful school in St. Petersburg, Florida, where I =
was a beginning Media Specialist, Computer Skills teacher for 5-12, and =
IT person, all rolled into one! I can't tell you how many times all of =
you saved my professional standing by suggesting such wonderful ideas =
and tested methods of teaching! Now I'm in the public school system and =
my responsibilities have grown 5-fold - 900 children and the same =
responsibilities minus the computer skills classes. I owe a lot of my =
success to the great suggestions you have shared over the years.=20

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hello, Dean,

Hi Dean - We are just starting to take that plunge. We had a parent evening
a few weeks ago and followed it up by setting up this wiki to share
resources. We plan on offering more parent nights this spring and next

Survey Questions and Anonymity

With all the posts about surveys, I thought I would let you all know that my company just
started a promotion on a Satisfaction Survey Package
(http://bedrickconsulting.com/Surveys.php)
that creates, administers, tabulates results and generates interactive reports in HTML, PDF,
PPT and Word formats.

To Kris and all those asking about what questions to ask, the package includes a tool that
allows you to select from a list of commonly asked questions as well as add your own custom
questions. Even if you are not interested in the package, I would be happy to offer you some
free advice on how to go about selecting your questions.

As far as maintaining anonymity, we can administer the results as an independent 3rd party to
make sure that your management cannot trace the responses back to the responder. If anybody
would like to talk more about surveys, feel free to contact me offline.

Perhaps this is a little off topic, but concerns like these I find to be
rather naive. Don't get me wrong, I believe very strongly in privacy and
wish more people asked questions about privacy. I say the concerns are naive
because the extent to which a typical school user on a school-issued
computer on the school's network can be assured that any service/activity is
anonymous is directly related to the extent to which the user trusts the IT
department, period. This is true almost regardless of what service is used.
If the IT department says such-and-such data is not recorded then the user
either needs to accept or not accept the statement based primarily on their
trust of the IT department. I say this because if the IT department issues
the computers and controls the network then the IT department can pretty
much see anything it wants without the vast majority of users having any
clue. Sure, the IT department can talk about SSL and generic URLs and...,
but most of this goes over the typical user's head and is moot if the IT
department controls the computer and the network. For example, even if the
survey system had some bullet proof anonymity-ensuring safeguards, how could
the typical user be sure that the IT department didn't modify a system file
to act as a key logger?

Regarding your specific SurveyMonkey question. If the information being
requested is so sensitive that trusting the IT department is too risky, I
think the best assurance a person could have is if you ask them to complete
the surveys using a generic URL from a home computer from a home Internet
connection. Assuming "home" is not on the school's network, this should
provide a reasonable level of assurance of anonymity. If this is still not
enough, then I think you're stuck with a non-tech means like paper-based
surveys.

Re: Surveymonkey

Hi Gareth
We do our surveys from our school web site using a software program called
Web Survey (Version 4 - I think). We bought one license and use it for all
our online school surveys. It lets you create the form (with a wizard) and
allows for branching, multiple choice, true/false, and free response
answers. Once the form is created, you can upload it to a folder on your
site. We usually send out an email with a link to the survey. The data can
be viewed online with tools from the package or downloaded. It will create
an Access Database to work from and generate reports (pre-packaged so I
don't have to create them). You own it and no else tracks it, if you post it
too your site.

Feel free to contact me off the list if you have questions. Good luck!
